Could a Syria-style Internet blackout happen in the US?

54 min.

The ongoing Internet blackout in Syria this week, like the one that occurred in Egypt early in 2011, prompts curiosity as to whether such an event could happen in one's own country. Here's one measure that gives a rough idea of how difficult it would be for your government to legally shut down the Internet.

First, it should be explained that the cutoffs in Syria and Egypt weren't the result of a physical disconnection, like bombing the cables or cutting the power to servers or relay stations. A country can take itself off the map largely?by removing itself from the Domain Name System and Border Gateway Patrol,?the software and databases that tell computers and servers how to contact one another.

In other words, a "kill switch" for the Internet might be as simple?a thing as directing DNS providers to delist or send false information (more easily done when they are run by the state), which could isolate the country from the rest of the online world with a few keystrokes, and restore it just as easily. This method is consistent?with the way in which Syria dropped offline, although a government spokesperson has reportedly claimed that the rebel faction was responsible and had cut the cables.

Renesys, an Internet monitoring and analysis company that provided insight during the disconnection of Egypt, gathered some data how resistant different countries are to a wide-scale shutdown. The company says that one way of measuring the?robustness?of a country's networks is by looking at the number of Internet service providers (ISPs) that have direct connections to other ISPs outside of the country. The more external connections, the more resistant the country is to shutdown.

Larger countries, of course,?have more ISPs, for example,?with one serving the North, one serving only the big cities, one primarily working with businesses, etc. But smaller countries and those with totalitarian or unstable regimes may have very few, or even just one official "outside line."

Again, this doesn't necessarily mean physical lines; many ISPs may share the same fiber backbone that connects, say, Greece and Turkey. Above, for instance, you can see that Syria is connected to neighboring countries by several submarine cables. If two ISPs share a line and only one is forced to cease operating, in most cases the other can keep working. On the other hand, if multiple lines are under the authority of just one provider, that makes shutdowns far easier.?

Countries with only one or two "frontier" providers include Libya, Ethiopia, Myanmar?and,?unsurprisingly, Syria. Places?like?Greenland and Madagascar are also at risk: Their geographic isolation and smaller populations make multiple external connections difficult and in some ways unnecessary.

On the other side there are the countries that should be highly resistant to shutdown: the United States, Canada, most of Europe, and Australia number among the 32 countries with 40 or more frontier providers. So while Americans may understandably be concerned with issues like Net Neutrality and monopolistic practices, it would be comparatively difficult for the government to cut off the country from the rest of the world.

This is only one way to look at risk and security, however. Physical infrastructure?could also be destroyed or rendered inoperable in several ways and at several points. While this method is far less likely to be used by governments (which have likely invested in that very infrastructure), an attacker would feel no such compunction in bombing a transatlantic cable or removing power to a major switch facility.

The outage in Syria is ongoing;?Renesys and other Internet companies like Akamai are monitoring and reporting on the state of the country's connectivity, which no doubt depends heavily on the outcome of the current?armed conflict.

Use Webmaster Tools to Get Higher Website Ranking | KurtTasche ...

? Aweber Facebook Connect

? ?

The internet is a highly competitive market where the true meaning of survival for the fittest is reflected. Businesses with online websites have turned to search engine optimization as a way to stay ahead in the competitive online environment. Online marketing strategies realize their full potential if they are closely monitored to ensure that they function as required at all instances. Webmaster tools are used to track the effectiveness of online marketing tools and restructure them accordingly.

What are webmaster tools?

Webmaster tools give website owners a platform through which they can monitor their indexing status and increase the online presence of their websites. Websites generally set out to increase their online visibility by putting into place several search engine optimization tools to draw web users to their sites. Such tools include link building, back links and incorporating rich keywords to a website?s code design. The need to monitor all these tools arises to make sure that they are serving the website as they should. Website owners typically subscribe for the monitoring services which may be free through search engines like Google or paid for.

How the tools monitor website optimization

The webmaster tools help to locate the top ranking keywords which get a website generated in results pages. The optimization process is a continuous one which constantly changes according to SEO requirements in order to increase the visibility of a website on results pages.

The tools also help a website to keep statistical track of its listings on results pages and identify any errors with the process. With the tools, a website can change how its domain appears on search results pages as a way of increasing its ranking.

Typically when a web user creates an online search, virtual robots look for websites which have content related to the keywords the web user keys in. The robots then relay the website locations back to search engines which generate search results lists with the information. The tools help to track the activity of these robots and identify instances where they might have been unable to reach the website.

Websites will generally come up with web articles, to market their site, and submit them to online directories. These articles link back to the website and drive web users to the target website. The monitoring tools allow webmasters to list all the links that lead back to the website.

Paid versus free monitoring tools

Some of the search engine optimization tools may be complicated and require the services of an internet marketing expert to initiate them on behalf of a website. Hiring an expert leaves all the online technicalities to the internet marketing expert and allows the business to concentrate on generating profits. However a business can effect simple optimization changes to their website such as updating their information regularly. It is entirely up to a business to decide whether they are better off with paid or free webmaster tools.

Residents believe vacant land threatens community, physical and mental health

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? As public health researchers continue efforts to understand the effects of neighborhood conditions on health, residents themselves can provide valuable insights regarding public health issues and potential solutions. A new study from researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania uses in-depth interviews with local residents to examine perspectives on how vacant land affects community, physical, and mental health. The study highlights the importance of community engagement in promoting urban revitalization.

Full results of the study, which mirror and expand upon previous studies linking vacant land to poor health, are published online in the Journal of Urban Health.

"This study prioritizes input from local residents to help us better understand community concerns. Residents in this study clearly see vacant land as a negative force that undermines health in their own neighborhoods," said lead author Eugenia C. Garvin, MD, a resident in the Department of Emergency Medicine. "As local communities work to recover from the recent housing crisis, which has caused a significant increase in vacancy rates, the perspectives of residents reinforce the idea that both the economy and health suffer when neighborhoods decline."

An analysis of 50 in-depth interviews reveals that residents are concerned about the effect of vacant land on community well being. Participants feel vacant land overshadows the positive aspects of their neighborhood. For example, illegal use of vacant land for dumping, prostitution, or drug sales contributes to a sense of helplessness and a lack of trust among neighbors. Prior research has shown that communities lacking collaboration and respect for one another are more likely to have increased rates of violence. Participants in the latest study echo the concern that vacancy promotes violent crime, making people feel less safe and often forcing them to stay inside. The presence of vacant lots -- which are often strewn with garbage, vermin and other hazards such as broken glass -- contributed to a sense of stress among Philadelphia residents, making them feel angry, or even depressed.

Though strategies for dealing with vacant land fall under the broad spectrum of urban planning and revitalization, the study suggests that the success of community programs aimed at reducing the negative effect neighborhood conditions have on health will depend heavily on incorporating the priorities and concerns of local residents into their design.

"Participants in the study had their own ideas for how to change vacant land from a negative to a positive influence in their communities," Garvin explained. "Some suggested transforming vacant lots to playgrounds and turning abandoned homes into subsidized housing. Some even felt they could take on small improvement projects themselves if given the proper resources by the city. Working with community groups and local residents is a huge opportunity for policy makers. The success of public health policies will depend heavily on the city's commitment to deploying the necessary resources and working with residents who experience the effects firsthand."

Charles Branas, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology, Shimrit Kedem, manager of the Mixed Methods Research Lab, Jeffrey Sellman, research assistant, and Carolyn C. Cannuscio, ScD, assistant professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at Penn Medicine co-authored the study.

Holiday Overspending Can Have Long-Term Consequences

Millions of consumers have begun their holiday shopping, snagging sale items either in-person or online, and therefore considering themselves savvy shoppers.? At the same time, many lost sight of the fact that regardless of the price, a bargain isn?t a smart purchase if it compromises a person?s overall financial health.

??If there?s one time of the year when people shop with their heart, not their head, it?s the holiday season,? said Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).? ?Emotional spending during the holidays is often the tipping point that pushes people over the edge financially, as common sense can take a backseat during this time of the year.?

?To help consumers remain financially responsible during the holidays, the NFCC offers the following five reminders of the long-term consequences of over-spending, some of which can last far after the lights are taken down and the tinsel is packed away.?

  • Paying additional interest ? Adding new debt to an existing debt load, one which cannot be paid in full when the bill arrives, equals paying a larger dollar amount of interest due to the higher outstanding balance.? Even worse, when a balance is carried over from month-to-month on an account, interest is paid on the previous months? interest.? People often boast of buying an item on sale, then pay for it over time, thus wiping out any savings.
  • Diminished future borrowing power ? An increased level of debt could cause lenders to decline applications for new lines of credit or loans.? Since no one knows what the future holds, not being in a position to tap into new credit is something to guard against.
  • Diminished future buying power ? Buying on credit is a contractual agreement to pay the debt later, often with money that has yet to be earned.? Using tomorrow?s money for today?s expenses compromises future spending.
  • Lower credit score ? Excessive debt often leads to paying late, skipping payments, and utilizing too high a percentage of open credit, all of which could lower the all-important credit score.? Further, applying for new lines of credit simply to save money on today?s purchase will not only increase the temptation to spend, but will show as an inquiry on the credit report, potentially lowering the score.?
  • Debt interferes with life?
  • - Debt is a 24/7 problem, distracts people from their job and home-life, interrupts sleep and potentially causes marital strife.?

?With the economy still on shaky ground and job security not something to be counted on, it makes no sense to self-inflict financial damage this holiday season,? continued Cunningham.?

For help taking charge of your financial future, reach out to a trained NFCC Certified Credit Counselor.? To locate the NFCC Member Agency closest to you, call (800) 388-2227, or go online to www.DebtAdvice.org.? For assistance in Spanish, dial (800) 682-9832.

US to sell offshore wind leases

Federal plans to sell competitive leases next year for offshore wind farms off Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Virginia are a first. Each offshore wind farm could power 700,000 homes.

The federal government plans to sell leases for?wind?farms off the coasts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Virginia, marking the first time it has sold competitive leases for?wind?energy on the outer continental shelf, officials said Friday.

The leases for the two areas, which total more than 430 square miles, will be sold next year, the Department of Interior and its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said.

"Wind?energy along the Atlantic holds enormous potential, and today we are moving closer to tapping into this massive domestic energy resource to create jobs, increase our energy security and strengthen our nation's competitiveness in this new energy frontier," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a written statement.

The announcement was hailed by the conservation group Oceana, which called it a major step in developing domestic clean energy.

"We're getting a step closer to seeing real turbines out there in the water," said Nancy Sopko, the group's ocean advocate. "The more progress is made, it sends that signal out to the rest of the world that the U.S. is serious about developing?wind?energy here."

The zone off Rhode Island and Massachusetts, which sits a little about 10 miles off Rhode Island's shore, will be leased in two parcels. The Virginia area, about 27 miles off the southern part of the state, will be available as a single lease, the Department of Interior said. Officials said each area could be developed to generate enough electricity to power 700,000 homes.

The plan is part of an Obama administration strategy to focus energy development in areas with the greatest potential and to work with states, commercial fishermen and other stakeholders early in the process to address possible conflicts, said Tommy P. Beaudreau, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

There are no offshore?wind?farms?in the United States, although several are already in development off Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Delaware. The Rhode Island and New Jersey developments are in state waters, while the Delaware lease was not awarded in a competitive process, Sopko said.

The Cape?Wind?project, in federal waters off Cape Cod in Massachusetts, was the nation's first offshore?wind?project to be approved and predates the system that has since been put into place, Sopko said. It is scheduled to be up and running in 2015.

A project under development in Rhode Island, which includes just a handful of turbines, is scheduled to go online in 2014, which is would make it the nation's first offshore wind?farm.
