BJP condemns blocking of journos' Twitter accounts

"This is a murder of liberty and right of free political speech."

"This is a murder of liberty and right of free political speech."

MUMBAI: BJP in Maharashtra today condemned the Government's action of blocking Twitter accounts of some prominent journalists.

State BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said the nation is "staring again at a Emergency-like situation".

Criticising the Government for blocking Twitter accounts of leading journalists and blocking Facebook pages as well as websites, Bhandari said that many anti-Congress Government voices are being silenced.

Bhandari said such acts of censorship and high-handedness remind of the black days during Emergency.

"This is a murder of liberty and right of free political speech," he said.

He questioned why many other Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and websites fomenting trouble, were allowed to continue.

"This action of the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress Government is a blatant display of unabashed minoritism," Bhandari said. He demanded that the government should withdraw these restrictions immediately.

Top 10 Tips To Play A Great Billiards Game

By: Akaash Prasad If you're looking for a leg-up for your next billiards match, here are ten tips to give you that extra something that your opponent might be missing.
  1. Chalk It Right Poor chalking is usually the reason your ball doesn't spin the way you want it to. Before you grab your pool cues from their pool cue cases very important to protect your cues and apply the chalk, make sure you know proper technique.

  2. Swing Through Just like golf, what you do before and after you hit the ball is just as important. Make sure your backswing is slow and smooth. You don't want to bring it back too quickly and rob yourself of time, and you don't want to take too much time staring either.

  3. Get A Ritual & Stick With It Before you even pick up your pool cues, visualize a checklist in your head of all the things you want to do when taking a shot. Then complete each of those tasks until they become second nature.

  4. Once You Commit, Commit You've got that ritual perfected so by the time you begin your shooting motion, there should be no hesitation. If you are still thinking of what to do as you pull back, you can be sure that you're going to miss the shot.

  5. Stripes vs. Solids Playing 8-Ball? Make a strategic selection. Your first move should be to take the billiard balls that give you the best chance to win in your first round. Otherwise, pick the ones that will prevent your opponent from running the table.

  6. The England Rule No matter what, keep calm and carry on. You're going to have bad breaks and unlucky angles. Don't get mad. Don't show your opponent you're rattled. Just stay positive and you'll get back into the zone.

  7. Nothing Wrong With Conservative Whenever you're stuck between two shots, take the easier, more conservative one. You're more likely to make it and keep control of the game.

  8. Use Physics, Then Don't There is a science behind the way to stand, move your arms and hit the ball. But once you start your motion, let go of the science and let your instincts take over. You can be analytical during practice, but the match is all about the moment.

  9. Humidity Matters The damper the pool table, the faster draw will rub off the cue ball. Keep that in mind as the match progresses.

  10. Breaking Good Your cue ball should be side spinning, not following, on the break upon impact.

Helium-breathing apes display operatic vocal skills, say researchers

The gibbon, a lesser ape native to Asia, uses the same vocal techniques as trained sopranos, finds a Japanese experiment involving helium-enriched air.

Gibbons effortlessly use the same techniques as professional opera singers when calling out to other animals, scientists found by listening to the squeaky songs of one of the apes on helium.

The Japanese study provides evidence for an unusual physiological similarity between gibbons and humans.

"The complexity of human speech is unique among primates as it requires varied soft sounds made by the rapid movements of vocal tracts," lead researcher Takeshi Nishimura, from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, said in a statement. "Our speech was thought to have evolved through specific modifications in our vocal anatomy. However, we've shown how the gibbons' distinctive song uses the same vocal mechanics as soprano singers, revealing a fundamental similarity with humans."

Nishimura's team analyzed 20 melodious and loud calls of a captive white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) in a normal atmosphere, followed by 37 calls in an environment infused with helium.

Sucking in helium from a balloon gives humans a squeaky, high-pitch-sounding voice, because the gas, which is less dense than air, pushes the resonance frequencies of the vocal tract upwards, but doesn't change the sound at its source. An analysis of the gibbon's squeaky songs suggested that the same is true for these apes. Like humans, the origin of the sound of a gibbon's call, which occurs in the larynx, is separate from the vocal tools used to modify it, the research showed. [Listen to Gibbon Calls]

What's more, the analysis demonstrated gibbons have expert control over the tuning of their vocal cords and tract when singing ? an ability that is important to the subtleties of human speech and is mastered by soprano singers.

"This is the first evidence that gibbons always sing using soprano techniques, a difficult [vocalization] ability for humans which is only mastered by professional opera singers," Nishimura said. "This gives us a new appreciation of the evolution of speech in gibbons while revealing that the physiological foundation in human speech is not so unique."

The study was published this week in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Treating back Pains with Dr. Suzan DRX 9000 Treatments

I?ve been experiencing severe back pains since I started to work in an architectural firm. At first, I thought my body was just adjusting with my work and then later, I took it as stress. However, in the long run, the pain became unbearable to take and that was the time I realized that this is something serious. And that was the time I seek for medical assistance. At first I tried all the treatments and medications recommended to me by the doctor but still to no avail. I was about to consider surgery when a friend told me about the efficiency of Dr. Suzan DRX 9000 treatments. At first, I was hesitant knowing that there are bogus medical treatments being offered in the market these days however when I tried to visit their official website I was educated with its winders and how it could really treat human pains. Then I decided to give it a try. I visited Dr. Suzan in her clinic and was initially examined. It was found out that my back pain is actually a symptom of a spinal disease and if I took it for granted in a longer time, I would be suffering a much worse health ordeal. With this, Dr. Suzan recommended a treatment that made use of their latest chiropractic device called Spinal Decompression. The treatment took quite a while. However, you would definitely experience some change at the end of every session. As of now, I am totally healed without a trace of pain in my back.

Primate of the opera: What soprano singing apes on helium reveal about the human voice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Have you ever heard an opera singing ape? Researchers in Japan have discovered that singing gibbons use the same vocal techniques as professional soprano singers. The study, published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, explains how recording gibbons singing under the influence of helium gas reveals a physiological similarity to human voices.

The research was led by Dr Takeshi Nishimura from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, Japan. His team studied the singing of a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) at Fukuchiyama City Zoo, in northern Kyoto.

A gibbon's song is acoustically unique among primates, with a loud melody which can be heard over two miles away. In the wild gibbons use their songs to communicate with neighboring pairs, strangers and potential mates through impenetrable jungle where visibility is poor.

"The complexity of human speech is unique among primates as it requires varied soft sounds made by the rapid movements of vocal tracts," said Dr Nishimura. "Our speech was thought to have evolved through specific modifications in our vocal anatomy. However, we've shown how the gibbons' distinctive song uses the same vocal mechanics as soprano singers, revealing a fundamental similarity with humans."

To explore these similarities the team conducted the first acoustic investigation on non-human primates using helium gas. The gas is famous for making human voices appear high pitched by shifting the resonance frequencies of the vocal tract upwards. The gas is useful for studying animal vocal mechanisms as it increases sound velocity and resonance frequencies.

The team recorded 20 gibbon calls in normal air atmosphere, before recording 37 calls in a helium-enriched atmosphere. The resulting sounds, which are available as audio files, reveal how gibbons can consciously manipulate their vocal cords and tract to make their distinctive sound.

"The lowest frequency of harmonics is amplified in a gibbon's song when performed in normal air," said Nishimura. "However, in a helium-enriched atmosphere the tuning of the vocal cord vibration and the resonance of the vocal tract are altered as the gas causes an upward shift of the resonance frequencies."

This supports the theory that, as with humans, there is independence between the origin of the sound and the vocal tools used to manipulate it.

This shows that gibbons use the same process for producing speech as humans, whereby acoustic sound originates from the larynx and is controlled by a filter, determined by the shape of the supralaryngeal vocal tract. This manipulation forms speech and is known as the 'source-filter' process of speech production.

Singing gibbons always, and with minimal effort, adopt the complex vocal techniques which are only mastered in humans by professional soprano singers. This discovery suggests the development of complex vocal abilities in humans was not due to unique evolutionary modifications. Instead it shows that humans share the biological fundamentals of vocalization with other primates, but in speech have simply acquired another of its most sophisticated forms.

"This is the first evidence that gibbons always sing using soprano techniques, a difficult vocalization ability for humans which is only mastered by professional opera singers," concluded Nishimura. "This gives us a new appreciation of the evolution of speech in gibbons while revealing that the physiological foundation in human speech is not so unique."

HTC One V makes the leap to Cricket's lineup September 2nd for $270

HTC One V makes the leap to Cricket's lineup September 2nd for $270

The One line hasn't seen much carrier love lately, but that's all set to change next month. Beginning September 2nd, the littlest member of that smartphone troupe -- the One V -- will be hitting Cricket's lineup at $270, no contract necessary, and notching two milestones in the process. Aside from offering subscribers a belated first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, the Sense-skinned 3.7-incher's release also counts as HTC's official hardware debut on the network. In case you've forgotten and need a bit of a spec refresher, the odd-lipped Legend throwback bucks the de rigeur multi-core trend for a single 1GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU running Android 4.0, a 5-megapixel rear camera powered by ImageSense tech and, for better or worse, features Beats Audio integration. It's no heavyweight as current smartphones go, but if you're keen to push things forward, this lil' fella packs a considerable punch. Check out the company's official presser after the break.
