Madison ranks No. 20 on Richard Florida's list of per capita venture capital activity

Madison is among the country's top 20 metro areas for venture capital activity per capita, according to a recent analysis by urban studies theorist Richard Florida.

Madison ranked 20th on Florida's list, with $11.5 million, and 1.9 venture deals per 100,000 people, Florida's analysis showed.

Silicon Valley topped the list with 22.6 venture deals per 100,000 people, followed by San Francisco, Boulder, Colo., and the Boston area. The other Midwestern city on the list was Ann Arbor, Mich., with 6.4 venture deals per 100,000 people.

Florida's conclusion about which geographical areas are becoming high-tech challengers to Silicon Valley:

"Silicon Valley's lock on high-tech activity is no longer what it once was. San Francisco, along with urban centers in New York and Boston-Cambridge, have upped the ante, and smaller college towns have also shown they can play as well."

Florida and his Martin Prosperity Institute research team performed the analysis at the request of Brad Feld, co-founder of TechStars, author of the book Startup Communities and a key force in Boulder's entrepreneurial community.

Wisconsin companies raised about $95 million of venture capital in 2012, less than 1% of the total raised in the U.S. About $66 million of that was raised by Madison companies, Florida said.

SF Bay Area commuter rail service resumes

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Commuter rail service resumed Friday in the San Francisco Bay Area after unions called off a strike and agreed to extend a labor contract for a month while bargaining continues.

Thirty-five trains were put back in service in time for an expected light evening commute, the Bay Area Rapid Transit agency said.

Frances DeLoach of Oakland was among the dozens of commuters who lined up at the West Oakland station for the first trains to San Francisco after nearly five days without service.

DeLoach, catering supervisor at AT&T Park, was excited that she didn't have to drive and pay as much as $50 to park, and could take the time to focus on preparing her staff before the Giants-Dodgers game.

"I sure hope BART and those unions can resolve their issues," DeLoach said.

The current contract between BART, the nation's fifth-largest rail system, and its two largest unions will be extended for 30 days after expiring earlier this week.

"The parties will continue to negotiate just as hard as they are now," California Labor Secretary Marty Morgenstern said late Thursday. "The battle's not over. The job's not done."

Morgenstern said he and two top state mediators urged the bargaining parties to agree to an extension of the current labor deal. Both groups had said they were far apart in negotiations, but details were not provided.

"Unfortunately, the issues that brought us to this point remain unresolved," BART General Manager Grace Crunican said.

Key sticking points in the labor dispute include salaries, pensions, health care and safety.

Josie Mooney, a chief negotiator for Service Employees International Union Local 1021, asked the public to help keep the parties on task.

"We stand together tonight and we expect to be standing together with a new contract at the end of Aug. 4 and we hope to goodness that you insist that all the parties do the right thing," Mooney said.

BART serves more than 400,000 commuters each weekday. It carries passengers from the farthest reaches of San Francisco's densely populated eastern suburbs to San Francisco International Airport across the bay.

The strike began early Monday after negotiations broke off. Talks resumed Tuesday amid mounting political and public pressure. Negotiations continued on Wednesday and again for nearly 12 hours on Thursday before the parties announced the strike was over.

The stoppage caused stress and frustration in the region. Commuters lined up early in the morning to either carpool, wait for BART's free charter buses or catch ferries heading to San Francisco while enduring heavy rush-hour traffic on the Bay Bridge.

Commuter Star Salgado, 27, of Richmond, said Friday that she hasn't given up on BART but may continue carpooling.

"This week was such an inconvenience that I don't know if I can put up with BART right now," Salgado said after opting to take the transit agency's free shuttle into San Francisco. "I just want to get through today."

BART said workers from the two unions now average about $71,000 in base salary and $11,000 in overtime annually. The workers also pay a flat $92 monthly fee for health insurance.

BART's previous strike lasted for six days in 1997.

Antonette Bryant, the ATU Local 1555 president, said late Thursday that BART is "on notice" and has 30 days to hammer out a new deal.

"We're not going to let them hijack us and the riding public and we are deeply sorry this had to happen," Bryant said.

Green algae and brave beach-goers take over Chinese coast

Qingdao is truly earning its name this year. The Chinese city?s name means ?green island? and on July 5, LA Times is reporting that just off the coast is a mass of green algae that is now twice the size of Los Angeles County.

"); }

The algae began growing about a month ago and there are some sections of water where the algae is 16 inches deep. But this hasn?t completely stopped beach-goers from braving the slimy sludge. The algae, known as enteromorpha prolifera, has been growing in these waters for the past seven years, though this year the size of growth is record-breaking.

The high rate of growth is brought on by the right water temperature and an increased amount of phosphorus in the water. The phosphorus and other minerals have likely come from industrial runoff and pollution.

Workers are using bulldozers, nets and boats to try to clear the area, but so far they haven?t been able to keep up. The algae isn?t dangerous to the humans who choose to frolic in it, but it can damage the ocean?s ecosystem, by limiting the amount of sunlight available to the plants underneath the surface.

The Guardian notes that this explosion of algae is the result of a dramatic change in the ecosystem.

EE taking it up a notch with double-speed LTE and 802.11ac WiFi router

EE, the UK's only 4G LTE enabled network provider, has this morning officially announced the rollout of double-speed LTE beginning tomorrow. Customers in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield will all benefit from the new super-fast mobile data. The service has already been turned on in parts of London for testing, and we've seen speeds around 50Mbps on our devices as a result.

EE is also shuffling around its tariffs, promising larger data allowances for their customers to make good use of all this extra speed. There will also be a new shared plan, which allows up to five different connections to be attached to one bill, but is set to cost ?112 per month for a combined 20GB allowance. Alongside the shared plans, EE will finally launch pay-as-you-go mobile broadband tariffs, for those of us eager for some 4G on our iPads or Mac without the need for a contract.

EE also offers home broadband, and of note today is the announcement of the Bright Box 2, an improvement to their home broadband router. The new router will offer dual-band WiFi, and will be the first network supplied 802.11ac router in the UK. Perfect for putting to use with that new MacBook Air you just bought.

The new plans are set to come into effect from July 17, but the data speeds should start going up in those lucky cities tomorrow. I wish I was one of them, however sadly my city hasn't get received regular LTE from EE yet. Who's the lucky ones, and who, like me, is still waiting on any love at all?

Sony Xperia SP review

Xperia SP

With impressive internals and a unique design, is Sony's new mid-ranger as good as it appears on paper?

Once an underdog in the Android world, Sony Mobile put out a strong showing earlier in the year with smartphones like the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. With these devices the Japanese manufacturer seeks to differentiate itself with high-quality materials and outstanding designs. So it’s interesting to see that in its new mid-ranger, the Xperia SP, Sony is looking back to its smartphone design heritage, resurrecting ideas like the transparent element from last year’s NXT series.

On paper it’s packing reasonable specs, too — a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 1GB of RAM, a 4.60inch 720p display and an 8-megapixel camera, not to mention LTE support. Not too long ago that’d have been considered flagship territory. So, with a good-looking chassis and powerful internals, does Sony have a mid-range hit on its hands? Check past the break to find out.

Apple applies for 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

(AP) ? Apple Inc. has applied for a trademark in Japan for "iWatch" as rumors suggest it may be developing a smart wristwatch.

A document obtained Monday from the Japan Patent Office's website said the application was made June 3 and made public June 27.

It was not immediately clear when the application might be approved. Patent office and Apple officials in Japan were not available for comment late Monday.

Apple is rumored to be working on a smart watch that would run on a version of the operating system used by its iPhone and iPad. The company has not confirmed those rumors, but CEO Tim Cook has hinted that it may be developing a wearable computing device such as a wristwatch.

Applying for a trademark in Japan isn't proof of Apple's intentions. The company based in Cupertino, California, has many patents for devices it will never produce.
