Captive lion reintroduction programs in Africa operate under 'conservation myth'

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? A new report published in the international conservation journal Oryx concludes that commercial 'wildlife encounter' operations across Africa promoting the reintroduction of captive lions do little to further the conservation of African lions in the wild.

Released 'Early Online' on July 31, 'Walking with lions: Why there is no role for captive-origin lions (Panthera leo) in species restoration,' was authored by a blue-ribbon panel of lion conservationists and wild cat biologists from Panthera, the IUCN Cat Specialist Group and a team of university-based lion researchers. Demonstrating that no lions have been successfully released as a result of this process, the report determines that commercial captive lion reintroduction programs operate largely under a 'conservation myth.'

The last two decades has seen a rapid growth of such operations especially across Southern Africa. Advertised as 'wildlife encounters,' the programs typically charge tourists and paying volunteers to pet, feed and walk with hand-raised and so-called tame lions. To the paying public, the stated objective is the eventual release to the wild of lions.

The Oryx paper assesses the potential of these programs to assist wild lion conservation by evaluating the role and suitability of captive lions for release. The report concludes that captive-bred lions are simply unnecessary for reintroduction projects. For more than two decades, wild lions have been translocated and rigorously monitored in over 40 parks across southern Africa with high success rates. Over 500 wild lions have been re-established by this process. More importantly, the evaluation shows that captive-bred lions and their offspring are poorly suited for survival and release compared to their wild-born counterparts.

The report's senior author and Panthera's President, Dr. Luke Hunter, explained, "The simple fact is, 'lion encounter' type programs do little to help conserve wild lions. We show that any sincere effort to re- establish lions simply has no reason to resort to captive animals; wild lions are already much better equipped to be wild. Releasing captive animals unnecessarily increases the costs, risks of failure and the danger -- to both lions and humans."

The report also claims that captive-lion enterprises divert critical resources and attention from projects making a real impact on declining wild lion populations. Dr Paula White, an author of the paper and

Director of the Zambia Lion Project at the University of California notes, "These operations charge the public to spend time with tame lions claiming that it contributes meaningfully to lion conservation. Imagine if that funding, and the sincere interest of the people paying it, was devoted to addressing the real reasons that wild lions are declining and threatened. Spending money to breed lions behind fences is not helping."

While perhaps more than 200,000 wild lions lived in Africa over a century ago, their numbers are now 'thought to be fewer than 30,000. Listed as 'Vulnerable' by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and extirpated from over 80% of its natural range, the lion is now on track to share the fate of its distant cousin, the Endangered tiger.

Dr. Matthew Becker, CEO of the Zambian Carnivore Programme (and not an author on the report) notes "Certainly interacting with tame lions is a unique experience, but it's not conservation. We have such 'Walking with Lions' programs in Zambia and they require a continual stream of young imported lions, which live out their days in captivity because they are not suitable for release. Zambia doesn't need captive-bred lions versus increased protection of its wild populations and ecosystems. Help lions by supporting the classic walking safaris that occur in our magnificent protected areas -- that's the real walking with lions."

Along with Panthera's team of lion experts and Paula White, the Oryx publication was co-authored by Cole Burton (University of Alberta), Andrew Loveridge (Oxford University), and Panthera's Cat Advisory Council Member's Laurence Frank, and Christine and Urs Breitenmoser, who additionally chair the International Union for the Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission's Cat Specialist Group.

Syrian regime claims gains in Aleppo, rebels deny

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government forces mounted new ground attacks against rebel-controlled neighborhoods in Syria's commercial hub of Aleppo, the state media said Monday, but failed to dislodge the opposition from their strongholds, according to activists.

The Syrian army has massed its forces around Aleppo, where rebels hold several neighborhoods after a 10-day offensive, and has been pounding it with tanks and helicopter gunships. There have also been periodic incursions of government tanks but the rebels have held on to their gains.

This use of heavy weapons, particularly helicopters, is just another nail in President Bashar Assad's coffin, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said late Sunday during a stopover in Tunisia as he kicked off a Mideast tour expected to focus heavily on the unfolding crisis in Syria.

Already an estimated 200,000 civilians ? almost 10 percent of the population ? have fled the fighting in Aleppo, according to the U.N. official for humanitarian affairs, Valerie Amos, citing the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent. Aleppo is Syria's largest city with around 3 million inhabitants.

Syrian state media reported late Sunday that the army had "purged" Aleppo's southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels in one of the first districts they took control of in their bid to seize the city.

There was also a successful operation in Sukhour neighborhood, in the northeast of the city and another rebel stronghold, the state media said.

Activists, however, disputed these claims and just described another day of fierce shelling of certain areas, backed up by the occasional foray on the ground.

"They have tanks in nearby Hamdaniya and there is fighting, and there have been random bombardments of Salaheddine," said Mohammed Saeed, who is based in the embattled city.

While giving no indication that the Obama administration is contemplating military intervention, Panetta said it is increasingly clear that the Syrian crisis is deepening and that Assad is hastening his own demise.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people ... I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's coffin," Panetta told reporters traveling with him from Washington. "His regime is coming to an end."

Assad's regime has been plagued by a string of defections, including three high ranking diplomats and several military commanders. On Monday, a Turkish official announced that a Syrian brigadier general who was deputy chief of police in Syria's Latakia region, had defected.

The general was among a group of 12 Syrian officers who crossed into Turkey late Sunday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of Turkish government rules. His defection raises the number of generals to have left for Turkey since the start of the 17-month-old uprising to 28.

But Syria's army remains mostly intact and still vastly outguns the rag-tag rebel army, which is armed for the most part with assault rifles, machine guns and doesn't have the heavy weapons necessary to effectively oppose tanks and helicopter gunships.

The government boosted its forces outside Aleppo and began an assault over the weekend to retake the commercial hub, bombarding rebel neighborhoods and leaving streets littered with rubble and empty apartment blocks with gaping smashed windows, according to videos of the city posted online in recent days.

Fleeing residents described to The Associated Press incessant shelling, shortages of food and gasoline and soaring black market prices for everyday staples.

"I am extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons on people in Aleppo," Amos said in a statement from New York late Sunday. "Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas. They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."

She added that while the fighting made getting to the needy very difficult, the U.N. agencies and the Red Crescent were continuing their efforts to deliver food, blankets and hygiene kits.

Phelps, Park, Biedermann among swim surprises

(AP) ? Michael Phelps barely qualified in the 400-meter individual medley on the opening day of Olympic swimming Saturday, squeaking into the final by seven-hundredths of a second.

"That one didn't feel too good," he said.

Phelps wasn't the only surprise of the morning at the Aquatics Centre, where Queen Elizabeth appeared briefly.

Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea won his 400 freestyle heat, but was disqualified for a false start. Paul Biedermann of Germany, the world record holder in the event, failed to make the final.

"That's the Olympics," said Canadian Ryan Cochrane, who barely made the 400 free final. "It's always a surprise, every single heat. You just have to focus on your own race."

Phelps, the two-time defending Olympic champion, won his 400 IM preliminary heat in 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds with a time that was well off his world record of 4:03.84 set four years ago in Beijing, when Phelps won a record eight gold medals.

But it was only good enough to secure the last spot in the evening final, when Phelps will swim in Lane 8 instead of the middle of the pool.

"The only thing that matters is just getting a spot in," he said. "You can't win the gold medal from the morning."

In the 400 IM, Kosuke Hagino of Japan led the way in 4:10.01, a national record. Chad le Clos of South Africa was second at 4:12.24, and Ryan Lochte of the United States advanced in third at 4:12.35.

Phelps' time was just fast enough to keep Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, the silver medalist in Beijing, out of the final. Cseh was ninth overall after leading Phelps during their heat before the American closed on the last lap of freestyle to beat him to the wall.

"I didn't expect those guys to go that fast in their heat," Phelps said. "I was slower this morning than I was four years ago."

Phelps' time in the grueling event that he had vowed not to swim again after Beijing took some of the luster off what was expected to be a showdown between him and Lochte for gold.

"You can't count him out," Lochte said of Phelps. "Even though he just squeaked in eighth, he's a racer. We're going to do everything we can to go 1-2 tonight."

Lochte, the bronze medalist in Beijing, has won the 400 IM at the last two world championships.

"My first race is always the worst one," he said. "I'm glad I got the cobwebs out."

Dana Vollmer had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 butterfly at 56.25 seconds, setting American and Olympic records, to lead 16 women into the evening semifinals.

"I'm really happy with how fast it was and I think it's only going to get faster," she said. "That's kind of a confidence-booster. I'm ready to go."

Lu Ying of China was second in 57.17 and Australian Alicia Coutts was third at 57.36. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, the world record holder, was fourth at 57.45.

American Claire Donahue moved on in seventh, while British teammates Francesca Hall and Ellen Gandy were eighth and ninth.

Jess Schipper of Australia, the bronze medalist four years ago, was 24th and missed the semifinals by eight spots.

In the 400 free, Sun Yang of China qualified fastest in 3:45.07. American Peter Vanderkaay was second at 3:45.80, followed by his teammates Conor Dwyer in 3:46.24.

Park was surprised by his DQ, saying, "I don't know why" after he walked off the deck. In Beijing, he became South Korea's first swimming gold medalist and then won the world title in Shanghai last year.

Biedermann washed out for the second straight Olympics. He didn't make it out of the heats in Beijing. He set the world record at the 2009 world meet in Rome at the height of the high-tech body suit craze. Those suits have since been banned.

Choreographer angry that NBC cut segment

NEW YORK (AP) ? The choreographer of a somber segment in the London Olympics opening ceremony said Saturday he's disappointed that NBC decided not to show it to an American audience.

Spectators were asked to display photos of loved ones who could not be there during the segment. The music, a hymn called "Abide With Me," was described in the ceremony's program as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death."

NBC producers did not air it, instead showing American viewers Ryan Seacrest's interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

"I am disappointed," said Londoner Akram Khan, who choreographed and danced in the segment. "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

The ceremony's program describes the performance as dramatizing "the struggle between life and death using such powerful images of mortality as dust and the setting sun."

Some in the British press have interpreted the segment as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place, she said.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks.

Although in many places the ceremony was aired in full, NBC aired it on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes. The network said there are often such production decisions when showing a taped version of a ceremony.

"Our program is tailored for the U.S. television audience," said NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes. "It's a credit to (ceremony director) Danny Boyle that it required so little editing."

Wholesaler settles claims it inflated drug prices

By Karen Freifeld, Reuters

Drug wholesaler McKesson Corp has agreed to pay $151 million to settle claims by 30 states that it inflated pricing information for more than 1,400 brand name drugs.

The settlement, announced Friday, resolves claims by the states, which said the inflated drug prices cost their Medicaid programs millions.

New York and California led negotiations for the states and were major beneficiaries of the settlement.

McKesson, based in San Francisco, said it continues to believe the claims are without merit.

According to court papers, McKesson marked up prices by 25 percent when reporting to First Databank, a publisher of drug prices that most state Medicaid programs use to set payment rates.

"This settlement holds McKesson accountable for attempting to make millions of dollars in illegal profits," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in the statement.

New York will receive $64 million of the $151 million in restitution, Schneiderman said.

California will receive more than $23 million, according to California Attorney General Kamala Harris. "We cannot allow dollars meant for patients to be diverted to inflate corporate profits," Harris said in a statement.

Illinois will receive $10 million, Lisa Madigan, attorney general for that state, said in a statement.

McKesson said that it does not set the "average wholesale price" benchmark used by most states to set payment rates. "We did not manipulate drug prices and did not violate any laws," the company said.

"However, given the inherent uncertainty of litigation, we determined that this settlement was in the best interest of our employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders," it said.

McKesson agreed to pay $190 million in April to settle the federal portion of the Medicaid costs.

Medicaid, a health care program for people on low incomes, is jointly funded by the federal government and the states.

Federal and state governments have recovered more than $2 billion from drug companies alleged to have reported inflated pricing information, said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in New Jersey.

McKesson reported fiscal first-quarter earnings Thursday well above forecasts, helped by cost cuts and lower-than-expected taxes, but its revenue came in below Wall Street projections.

Its shares were down 50 cents at $91.76 in early afternoon trading.

The case is U.S., ex rel. Morgan v. Express Scripts Inc et al, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 05-01714.

Stock Market Leaders Producing Solid Earnings Reports

Friday, July 27th, 2012
By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Stock Market Leaders Producing Solid Earnings ReportsThere are several companies that have produced good earnings reports and are making money for shareholders in this difficult stock market; I think they are worth going over. So far, a lot of earnings reports were mediocre this second quarter, basically meeting expectations with reduced outlooks. But a number of existing stock market winners that pay decent dividends to shareholders are announcing solid earnings reports with good expectations for the bottom half. Even in this fragile stock market environment, there are companies out there generating great earnings reports.

Consider The Hershey Company (NYSE/HSY), which is a business that pretty much everyone recognizes. The chocolate maker?s latest earnings report saw revenues of $1.4 billion, up 6.7% from revenues of $1.3 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income for the second quarter of 2012 were just under $136 million, or $0.59 per diluted share, compared with $130 million, or $0.56 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2011.

Hershey said that its been able to increase its prices without affecting demand; the company expects volumes to increase in the bottom half of the year, and management increased the company?s earnings outlook for all of 2012 from the previous $3.11 to $3.17 per share to a range between $3.17 and $3.23 per share. In my opinion, for such a mature business and brand, this is a great earnings report. On the stock market, the position is trading just below its all-time high, with a current dividend yield of 2.2%.

Then there?s PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE/PEP), which is a benchmark stock I always follow. (See ?My Favorite Benchmark Stocks That Lead the Stock Market.?) The company just reported a great second-quarter earnings report that beat consensus. The company is still going through a global restructuring, and it did have some one-time charges in its earnings report. PepsiCo?s net income was $1.5 billion, or $0.94 per share, in the latest quarter, down from net income of $1.9 billion, or $1.17 per share. Excluding one-time items, PepsiCo earned $1.12 per share, beating Wall Street consensus of $1.09 per share.

As we know, PepsiCo is a very mature business, but on the stock market, it?s a genuine leader. The stock was strong before the company?s latest earnings report; after the earnings report was released, the position broke through to a new 52-week high of just over $70.00 a share. All this, and a dividend yield of just over three percent.

Just like the economy, things are choppy in industry, and not all companies are able to produce good earnings reports that beat consensus. Today?s stock market leaders, however, will be best positioned to weather the next recession, and it?s great to see companies able to increase their selling prices without affecting demand.

Right now, the stock market continues to be trendless, trading off the news of the day, which doesn?t show any consistency. Expectations are now tempered for the bottom half of the year, and stock market investors can?t expect third- and fourth-quarter earnings reports to show a lot of growth. Going forward, the stock market leaders that report stability in their earnings reports will continue to outperform. This is a market that doesn?t require a lot of growth, but only stability of business conditions going into 2013.

Repetitious, time-intensive magical rituals considered more effective, study shows

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Even in this modern age of science, people are likely to find logic in supernatural rituals that require a high degree of time and effort, according to new research from The University of Texas at Austin.

The study, published in the June issue of Cognition, is the first psychological analysis of how people of various cultures evaluate the efficacy of ritual beliefs. The findings provide new insight into cognitive reasoning processes -- and how people intuitively make sense out of the unknown.

"One of the most remarkable characteristics of human cognition is the capacity to use supernatural reasoning to explain the world around us," said Cristine Legare, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. "We argue that the characteristics of ritual are the product of an evolved cognitive system."

Cause-and-effect thinking is critical to human survival, Legare said. So it's natural for people to find logic in supernatural rituals that emphasize repetition and procedural steps. If doing something once has some effect, then repeating it must have a greater effect. For example, if a mechanic says he inspected something five times, the frequency of his actions leads the customer to overestimate the effectiveness of his work.

To find out how people rate the effectiveness of magical rituals, Legare and graduate student Andr? Souza conducted a study in Brazil, a country suffused with rituals called simpatias. Used for solving problems as varied as quitting smoking, curing asthma and warding off bad luck, simpatias are formulaic rituals that involve various steps and repetition.

The psychologists presented 162 Brazilian respondents several versions of these rituals. Each was modified with different characteristics, such as repetition of procedures, number of steps, number of items used, and the presence of religious icons.

As part of the study, Legare asked the respondents to rate the effectiveness of each ritual. According to the findings, three elements of the simpatias had the biggest influence: number of steps, repetition of procedures and a specified time.

To see how magical rituals are perceived across cultures, the researchers conducted the same study with 68 U.S. respondents of various religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. As the researchers expected, the majority of respondents didn't believe in simpatias. Yet similar to the Brazilians, they were more inclined to believe in rituals involving numerous repetitions and steps. For example, they gave a higher rating for this sadness-curing ritual, which involves numerous steps and repetitions.

In a metal container, put the leaves of a white rose. After that, set fire to the leaves. Get the remaining ash from the leaves and put it in a small plastic bag. Take the small plastic bag and leave it at a crossroad. Repeat the procedure for seven days in a row.

Though simpatias are primarily practiced in Brazil, magical rituals and other superstitions are widely accepted in the United States. Findings from the study provide further insight into how people find logic in the supernatural, regardless of concrete evidence.

UN chief makes 11th hour plea on arms treaty

UN chief Ban Ki-moon made a last-ditch effort Thursday to break the deadlock over a landmark treaty to regulate the conventional arms trade, urging countries to "show flexibility."

Ban issued a statement saying he was concerned at the "very limited progress" made during month-long negotiations in New York, where the world's biggest arms producers have been haggling over the scope of the treaty.

Since the start, the United States has opposed the inclusion of ammunition, China does not want small arms and both Russia and China have sought restrictions on references to humanitarian law.

With talks due to end Friday on a first ever treaty to regulate the $70 billion a year industry, Ban urged the 193 UN member states to "show flexibility and work in good faith towards bridging their differences."

A draft treaty circulated Tuesday was severely criticized by rights groups, including Amnesty International and Oxfam, as full of "ambiguities and loopholes."

Syria, North Korea, Iran, Cuba and Algeria and other countries have sought from the start to thwart the treaty, diplomats and activists say.

The treaty must be agreed by a consensus of all 193 countries involved.

Even if the treaty is concluded, the conference has not yet decided how many countries must ratify it to bring it into force.

Ban "remains hopeful that the conference will yield a robust and legally binding Arms Trade Treaty," the statement released by his spokesman said.

"We owe it to all the innocent civilians who have fallen victim to armed conflict and violence," the UN chief said.

Social Scientists Might Gain Access to Facebook's Data on User Behavior

From Nature magazine

Social scientists hungry for Facebook?s data may be about to get a taste of it. Nature has learned that the social-networking website is considering giving researchers limited access to the petabytes of data that it has amassed on the preferences and behaviour of its almost one billion users.

Outsiders will not get a free run of the data, but the move could quell criticism from social scientists who have complained that the company?s own research on its users cannot be verified. Facebook's in-house scientists have been involved in publishing more than 30 papers since 2009, covering topics from what drives the spread of information and ideas to the relationship between social-networking activity and loneliness. However, because the company fears breaching its users? privacy, it does not release the underlying raw data.

Facebook is now exploring a plan that could allow external researchers to check its work in future by inspecting the data sets and methods used to produce a particular study. A paper currently submitted to a journal could prove to be a test case, after the journal said that allowing third-party academics the opportunity to verify the findings was a condition of publication.

?We want to participate in the scientific process and we believe that there should be a way to have other researchers validate [our studies] without infringing on the policies that we have set with our users,? says Cameron Marlow, head of Facebook's data-science team.

Restricted access
If the scheme were to go ahead, it would apply to papers after publication. Scholars would have to travel to the company?s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, because Facebook would not risk sending the data electronically, and they would have access to aggregated data only, and no personally identifiable information. The company would also allow access for only a limited period ? and contingent upon researchers signing a non-disclosure agreement. Marlow says, however, that these conditions should not keep researchers from being openly critical about matters related to the published paper such as technique or data processing.

External scholars would not be allowed to conduct their own studies on the data sets.

The alternative ? publicly releasing anonymized raw data sets ? is not likely to be an option, says Facebook. Internet company AOL, based in New York, and film rental and streaming firm Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, have both done this in the past, only for researchers to show that individuals could be identified in the anonymized data. ?It is hard to really guarantee that it is anonymous,? says Marlow.

Facebook's proposals are a step in the right direction, say researchers. ?Their intentions are very good,? agrees Bernardo Huberman, director of the social-computing group at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. Huberman has voiced concerns in Nature about the lack of researcher access to 'big data' at private companies. Facebook ?wants to get closer to something that is the scientific method?, he says.

But Huberman and others have practical concerns. The requirement for on-site visits will hinder many researchers, with few likely to receive? funding to travel to merely validate a completed study. Furthermore, it is unclear whether Facebook will allow researchers to validate research by running their own programs on the data. If scientists are restricted to repeating Facebook researchers? own analyses, says Anatoliy Gruzd, director of the social-media lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, ?they may be unknowingly repeating the same errors inherent in a technique?.

The Elka Almanac: Product Review: Kong Squeezz

Ever since our recent Gummy Bear success, Elka has been a lot more interested in squeaky toys. She no longer seems to think that she's hurting the toys when they squeak, and will actually play by herself with one. This is nothing short of miraculous, I assure you. Elka is a sharer, of the highest caliber.

So, when I received an email asking if we'd like to review the Kong Squeezz with rope toys, I said "Yes please!" We love new toys at Casa Elka, and I love Kong toys pretty much as a rule. They're durable, they don't smell funny, and Elka tends to react well to them.

The fact that these were squeaky toys with ropes made me think Elka would like them especially, because she will try to play tug with just about any toy. Not these, surprisingly! My second prediction, though, was correct. At least for the dumbbell one. See, if Elka doesn't want to play tug with a toy, she wants to chew it. What will she chew first? Ropes.

Really, though, the Dumbbell is just as amazing to her, if not more so, without the rope. It bounces erratically, it's just the right chewable texture, and it squeaks! The clever thing about the squeaker is that the hole the "noise comes out of" is inside the tube through which the rope was threaded. So, Elka can't chew on just that area the way she normally would.

I in fact watched her, on two separate occasions, play with the dumbbell without soliciting human interaction for half an hour or more. She chews it, shakes it, throws it around, and every once in awhile stomps on it with her paws when it's on the ground. At least one of our friends has remarked that he's never seen a dog go after things with her paws the way Elka does. Whenever she's mouthing it or moving her with her nose, she's also mumble-growling at it, which is completely adorable. I mentioned it on Twitter, and now I have to try and get a video of it.?

It alos amused me greatly to realize, belatedly, that this is yet another green toy for Elka. The other one is blue, though. Elka doesn't much want to tug with this one, either, and plays with it in much the same way. The way the ropes are looped, though, has preserved them so far. There isn't a single knot for her to focus on and destroy.

One of the balls mysteriously doesn't squeak already; I guess she chewed on the edges just enough that the air escapes from more than just the squeak valve. Or whatever technical term you might want to use for it is. This one Elka will bring to a person, so that they throw it. The double ball design means that it bounces erratically as well, something she never much seemed to care about with the plain ol' food holding Kongs. When it squeaks and bounces though, it's a hit.?

Elka even fell asleep with it in her mouth (of course her eyes opened when I got the camera, but I still got the shot).

It isn't very many toys that Elka will fall asleep with, or seek out to bring with her to different rooms of the house. Gumby is still a strong contender. But the blue Kong Squeezz with rope is one too, apparently. When I leave it out, that is. Because the rope has survived so far does not mean that I trust Elka implicitly and unsupervised with it! Additionally, the double ball one flops a good deal more when she shakes it, so that is another bonus in the Doberman book.

In conclusion, I think that the Kong Squeezz with rope, at least in these two iterations, is a pretty rocking product. It's durable, and I've mentioned before that Miss Elka isn't exactly gentle with her toys, especially toys that she loves (seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? For all her remarkable qualities, I sometimes need to remind myself that she is still "just" a dog). They squeak, but miraculously, the noises that are produced aren't completely obnoxious. They don't smell bad. And they keep her attention all on their own, without having to share the play! Definite thumbs up, Kong. Well played.

FTC disclaimer: I received the two Kong Squeezz with rope toys pictured to test, but was not compensated in any other way for this review.

More prostate cancer test advice for some men

There?s more advice on the contentious issue of prostate cancer screening: A leading group of cancer specialists says the decision hinges in part on a man?s life expectancy.

Doctors should discuss the possible pros and cons of those PSA blood tests with men expected to live longer than another 10 years, the American Society of Clinical Oncology recommended Monday.

That?s a contrast from guidelines issued this spring by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which recommended against routine PSA screening for all men. That government advisory panel found little if any evidence that PSA testing saves lives ? and said too many men suffer impotence, incontinence, heart attacks, occasionally even death from treatment of tiny tumors that never would have killed them.

In its own review, the oncologists? group ASCO concluded that doctors should discourage PSAs for men with less than 10-year life expectancy, for those very reasons.

But it didn?t find the evidence as clear-cut for younger or healthier men ? and released a step-by-step guide, in easy-to-understand language, to help them and their primary care physicians understand the controversy and make an informed decision. The new advice echoes guidelines from the American Cancer Society.

?This is a gray area of medicine,? said Dr. Ethan Basch, a prostate cancer specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who co-chaired ASCO?s review. ?That?s made this a very challenging discussion, and a very challenging decision.?

The guide makes clear that before men decide to have the PSA test, they should think about how they?d react to a suspicious result, and all the testing and treatment decisions that would entail.

Too much PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, in the blood only sometimes signals prostate cancer is brewing. It also can mean a benign enlarged prostate or an infection. Only a biopsy can tell. Most men will get prostate cancer if they live long enough. Some 240,000 U.S. men a year are diagnosed with it, most with slow-growing tumors that carry a very low risk of morphing into the kind that can kill.

Two huge studies, one in Europe and one in the U.S., evaluated whether routine screening can save lives. Without screening, about 5 in every 1,000 men die of prostate cancer over 10 years. The European study found PSA testing might prevent one of those deaths, while the U.S. study found no difference.

ASCO?s patient guide highlights the European study results.

Google adds calculation tools to math search results

5 hrs.

Google's search box is a handy place not just for finding websites, but for nearly any query. Quick calculations have been possible to input for years, but Google has just upgraded its results to include extra tools, such as a full calculator and dropdown boxes for unit conversions.

The changes are part of an ongoing enrichment of search results, the most visible of which is the Knowledge Graph, announced some months back. Knowledge Graph, and now the scientific calculator and unit conversion tool, provide instant results that can be further investigated should your original query not prove adequate.

Some functions?but not others are included; algebraic functions will show a graph but no calculator, and some conversion items aren't supported yet. For instance, converting cubits into fathoms does not yield a handy archaic measurements dropdown menu yet.

Google isn't publicizing these small improvements the way they did Knowledge Graph and other new features, so don't be surprised if a new tool pops up during one of your routine searches.

At least 11 killed in single truck crash in Texas

Updated 12:48 p.m. ET

(CBS/AP) GOLIAD, Texas - Authorities say a pickup truck has crashed in South Texas, killing 11 people in the vehicle and injuring 12. All 23 passengers were in the same Ford F-250 truck, according to officials.

Louann Presas, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, says the crash occurred about 7 p.m. CDT Sunday near Berclair when the truck ran off the highway and crashed into some trees. The unincorporated community is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

"The truck left the roadway and struck two very large trees," Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant told The San Antonio Express-News.

According to Bryant, a total of 23 people of "a variety of ages," including some children, were in the vehicle. The victims have not yet been identified, he said.

The alleged driver of the truck was ejected but is alive, Bryant said. Six others from inside the cab of the truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Another five victims outside of the pickup also died at the scene, he said.

She says the extent of the injuries to the surviving victims wasn't immediately clear. Crash investigators were still at the scene around 11 p.m. CDT.

A Goliad County sheriff's dispatcher deferred comment to a department spokesperson, who did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while.

may i reserve The Experimental Love: Her (Just Experimenting)

If you can't understand my silence...
then you won't be able to understand my words.
When will people understand that words can cut as sharply as any blade,
and that those cuts leave scars upon our souls?
