Best Hands-on Film School Program in the Country? | Sterling ...

Yes, I think so, or at least one of the very best hands-on filmmaking programs in the country. This was the second time I taught classes and guest lectured at Zaki Gordon and it only got better.

Located in Sedona Arizona, the Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking (ZGI) has students working on their first film within the first three weeks of the first semester.

Students get to make eight collaborative short films and write and direct their own twenty-minute thesis film in the first year of study! That is more than you will do at most of the Big Name schools in FOUR years!

And your (in-state) tuition will be approximately $5,000! Which is about ONE-TENTH the cost at any of the Big Name schools. The Digital Filmmaking Certificate is a little over $12,000 for the full year, including tuition, equipment and computer lab fees. Why not attend a one-year intensive film school and not have to pay the 30 or 40 thousand dollars plus cost per year at other noted film schools?

Students will produce and edit eight short films, focusing on a different assignment each cycle. They will work with professional screenwriter, Dan Gordon, to outline and write the script for their thesis short film.

They direct their short thesis films and manage the entire pre- and post-production process. The final edit of each film will debut at the ZGI Shorts Film Festival in May. They are also required to work as crew on two of their classmate?s thesis films.

Yes, USC School of Cinematic Arts, Chapman College, UCLA film school, Columbia College in Chicago, North Western, Cal State Northridge, DePaul, and many other film schools in the country are excellent schools which I highly recommend. But if I wanted to go to a film school today, I would not overlook Zaki Gordon, especially if my parents were not putting up the money. And if they insist on paying for your film school, it?s a lot easier cheque to scratch.

I love this school. The interim head of the school, Rue, is classy, organized and made my guest speaking experience one of the best I?ve ever had. She skillfully weaved my visit to Zaki Gordon into the Sedona Film Festival where I paneled with Kathleen Glynn (Producer and wife of Michael Moore) and Bobby Moresco (writer of ?Crash? and ?Million Dollar Baby?). I?m only sorry that so many people had to be turned away from the cozy little theater with limited seating.

Speaking of Film Festivals?

If you ever want to attend a terrific, well run, film festival, the Sedona Film Festival is a must, which is just another first class outfit in Sedona and not a bad place to be a tourist either.
