Ceragon Wins Multi-Million Dollar Contract from Navajo Tribal Utility ...

Paramus, New Jersey, May 22, 2012 - Ceragon Networks Ltd. (NASDAQ: CRNT), the #1 wireless backhaul specialist, today announced that it has received orders of approximately $4 million to supply microwave backhaul solutions and turnkey services including installation, project management and commissioning to the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA). The NTUA selected Ceragon?s FibeAir^? IP-10G to power the Navajo Nation?s wireless backhaul network. The systems are part of an over 530 mile network which is made up of microwave towers and fiber optics.

NTUA?s project is a result of a federal grant award from the National Telecommunications Infrastructure Administration to NTUA in 2010 to establish broadband connectivity within the Navajo Nation. Unpaid Overtime: Wage And Hour Lawsuits Have Skyrocketed In The Last Decade

Do American companies have a problem with paying their employees? A growing number of workers seem to think so.

Collective action lawsuits alleging wage and hour violations have risen 400 percent in the last 11 years, according to a recent post at CNNMoney. In 2011, there were more than 7,000 such lawsuits filed in federal court -- a huge increase since the turn of the century.

These lawuits involve workers who claim they didn't get paid the full amount for all the hours they worked -- either because they were improperly listed as ineligible for overtime, or because they simply never got the money for the work they put in.

Claims of this kind have become incredibly pervasive in recent years. Lawyers cited in a 2007 Bloomberg story on wage and hour lawsuits estimated that companies may be paying out more than a billion dollars a year to resolve these cases.

It's hard to think of a major company that hasn't had at least one wage and hour suit brought against it lately. In early May, to name one recent example, Taco Bell was hit with a lawsuit alleging that employees were often forced to work unpaid hours -- just the latest in a series of similar accusations the chain has faced.

Other companies whose workers have accused them of denying proper pay include Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Bank of America, Oracle, IBM, Fremantle Media and the Hooters restaurant chain.

In general, the weak economy and sluggish labor market have reduced the amount of leverage employees have in their relationship with their managers -- meaning it's been especially easy in recent years for bosses to demand ever more of workers while paying them the same amount as before.

The massacre in Syria over the weekend that killed more than 100 people, including women and children, in Houla, outside the city of Homs, has increased the concern over the chaos there to new levels. While this latest atrocity pushed Russia to support a UN Security Council resolution condemning the violence, Moscow hesitated to place sole responsibility on the regime of Bashar al-Assad, warning that the government there faces increased terrorist threats bearing the ?clear signature of Al Qaeda.?

Al Qaeda has never been a key player in Syria, but as the crisis there has drawn on, it has turned from a political struggle to an armed conflict, bringing the consequences of chaos and desperation in tow. Whether recent bombings are the work of the terrorist network is unclear, but what is certain is this: Syria has now become a proxy battlefield in which Al Qaeda is laboring very hard to find a new refuge, and to portray itself as a guardian of Sunni Muslims ? objectives that lie in stark contrast to those of the majority of Syrian protesters.

As the Syrian conflict escalates, and the country threatens to descend into all-out sectarian strife, Al Qaeda-like activists and factions will go to further lengths to establish a foothold in the country as they did in Iraq after the US invasion in 2003. Their success will depend on how Syrians react to these foreign fighters and whether the aggrieved Sunni community will provide shelter.?

Twin car bombings a couple weeks ago that targeted a military-intelligence branch in a Damascus neighborhood, and which reportedly killed more than 50 and wounded hundreds, do bear the hallmark of Al Qaeda. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon told youth conference attendees in New York, ?I believe that there must be Al Qaeda behind it. This has created again very serious problems.?

The Al-Nusra Front, a jihadist militant group that has claimed responsibility for the bombings in Damascus, is extremely shadowy and prime for speculation ? as are many details surrounding the violence in Syria. Al Qaeda-inspired or not, Al-Nusra should not be invested with any particular significance: There are dozens of opposition groups now operating independently in Syria.

While most eschew Al Qaeda?s tactics and ideology and are either religious-nationalists or secular-minded activists, more and more protesters have taken up arms to defend their communities. The Free Syrian Army is only one among many armed units operating independently from one another.

PARIS (AP) ? It was after a second-round victory at the 2007 French Open that Maria Sharapova famously compared her movement on red clay to a "cow on ice."

And nowadays?

"I do occasionally still feel like it," Sharapova said Tuesday, "and I'm sure I look like it, too."

Not quite. Certainly not in the first round of this year's French Open, anyway.

Looking rather comfortable moving around on the slow surface and getting off to a quick start at the only Grand Slam tournament she's never won, Sharapova produced a perfect score at Roland Garros on Tuesday, beating 78th-ranked Alexandra Cadantu of Romania 6-0, 6-0 in 48 minutes.

Truth is, the second-seeded Sharapova never gave her opponent much of a chance, compiling an 18-0 edge in winners. Sharapova won 51 points and lost only 18.

She didn't need to expend much energy out there, but she figures that she's in good enough condition to handle what can be a grueling place to play the seven matches required to earn a Grand Slam title.

Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006, and the Australian Open in 2008. The best she's done at the French Open, however, was the semifinals twice, in 2007 and last year.

Getting more and more efficient on clay, Sharapova is coming off a second consecutive Italian Open title on the surface last week.

In the past, Sharapova knows full well, a demanding three-set match at Roland Garros might leave her too sapped to be at her best in the following round.

"For the next match, it was just like the balloon popped or something, like ... you could tell my energy level wasn't there (and I) wasn't moving so good," she said. "And that has improved a lot, and helps me mentally, knowing that I don't feel like I'm saving myself so much."

The way Sharapova looks at it, she needed to focus on having better fitness and consistency from point to point, and from match to match ? and she has.

"Over the years, you learn what your body can take, what it can't, what you need, how you recover better, little by little," she explained. "I mean, look, I'm not ever going to be lifting 50-pound weights anytime soon ? or ever ? but it's little things, little muscles, little explosive steps that I feel like I've improved."

The 22-year-old Cadantu has never beaten someone ranked in the top 60, falling to 0-6 in such matches. She's also now 0-2 in Grand Slam matches.

And the Romanian's assessment after seeing Sharapova up close?

"She has a good game," Cadantu said. "She can make it here."

Thirty-two years ago this month an explosive eruption reshaped Mount Saint Helens in a matter of seconds. An earthquake under the volcano in Washington State on May 18, 1980, triggered the largest landslide in recorded history as billions of cubic meters of mountainside tumbled away, initiating a massive release of gas, lava and ash. The cataclysm killed 57 people and sent a plume some 20 kilometers into the sky.

The 1980 eruption was not totally unexpected. For the two months prior, earthquakes and steam explosions had rattled the mountain, and the north slope of the volcano had noticeably swelled outward. But interpreting just what was happening beneath the mountain to cause those shudders and belches was not possible.

Now a team in England and Germany has linked the seismic record from that era to magmatic processes beneath Mount Saint Helens by closely examining crystallized minerals formed in the volcano's innards just before eruption.

In a study appearing in the May 25 issue of Science, the researchers report that crystals of the silicate mineral orthopyroxene from 1980 and from subsequent eruptions trace various injections of magma, as well as other chemical changes, within the bowels of the volcano.

The crystals contain concentric rings of differing chemical composition. Some orthopyroxene crystals, for instance, have a magnesium-rich core surrounded by an iron-rich rim; others have an iron-rich core and a magnesium-rich rim. Each type of crystal zonation can record the conditions of the magma reservoir from which it emerged.

"We chemically fingerprint each of those zones to determine how they formed," says lead study author Kate Saunders, a volcanologist of the University of Bristol in England. The outer rim of an orthopyroxene crystal, she says, represents the most recent stage of crystal formation and typically grew just months before the crystal?s emergence in volcanic ejecta. That allowed the researchers to make precise estimates of when, and how, the crystals acquired their chemical forms. "Mount Saint Helens is really good?because the samples, we know exactly when they erupted," Saunders says.

In several cases, a flurry of crystallization matched up well with internal activity at the volcano, as inferred from seismic records. For instance, crystals with iron-rich rims increased in number in the weeks and months leading up to the May 1980 eruption, as earthquakes shook the mountain with low-frequency seismic waves. Such long-period quakes, Saunders says, are characteristic of magma giving off gas. "Previously it's been reported that iron-rich rims on orthopyroxene are due to changes in the water content of the magma, so it makes sense that if we've got degassing or fluxion of water or CO2 through the system, we may get more iron-rich rims," she says. Other crystals with magnesium-rich rims seem to mark an influx of hot magma from deep reservoirs just before eruption.

Those events are also captured in the seismic record, but the root cause of the tremors is not always clear from seismology alone. That is where the crystals can provide important corroboration?or critical insight into ancient eruptions, for which seismic records do not exist. Cancer Cure Not Being Funded

The Science of Cancer: Big Science vs. Big Pharma

Several years ago, University of Alberta researchers made the discovery of a lifetime: a colourless, odourless and readily-available compound that may be the ultimate cure for cancer. Researched since 2007, this compound, dichloroacetate (or DCA), has the fortune (and paradoxical misfortune) of being very inexpensive to produce.

?Companies are interested in producing a cure for cancer. However, they?re not interested in that drug being cheap.?

The compound went through clinical trials back in May of 2010 and is now tentatively being used on an off-patent basis. Since DCA cannot be patented, pharmaceutical companies do not stand to make a profit from it. Therein lies the rub; if Big Pharma cannot make a profit from a given medication, there is no incentive to market it or prepare it for widespread and public use. As a result, DCA is now used on a basis different from other cancer treatments. By individuals who somehow gained access to the compound, by doctors who administer it as a non-approved drug, or by scientists who test it in the lab.

Think of it as Bottled Water 2.0; try selling it high when everybody knows you can buy it ridiculously low.

The study and testing of this particular cancer drug runs primarily on donations rather than on capital. There is no ?Dichlorathine Rx? sold in pill form at your local drugstore, and there may never be such a thing unless enough philanthropists and individual donors step in.

I spoke briefly with Dmitry, a biochemistry graduate student at York University last week to try and gain some insight into this puzzling but urgent issue. He had a fair bit to say about the business of pharmaceutical research and development (R&D), though he was not aware of DCA at the time of our interview.

?Companies are interested in producing a cure for cancer. However, they?re not interested in that drug being cheap,? he says.

?There is a certain antibiotic that was proven to be effective against cancer, but it did not get any research funding because it?s already on the market for about $2 a pack. It?s very difficult to take a lot of money for something that costs so little.?

According to Dmitry?s calculations, it takes on average 15 to 20 years to move a given drug from the lab to the drugstore, and all the costs associated with its development, production and marketing can reach up to $1 billion. Make no mistake; it?s big business.

?There are simply no investors for this class of drugs. New products that appear must be expensive in order to reimburse and return all the money that was initially invested and expended in previous, unsuccessful R&D attempts. So there has to be profit; if there is no profit, then there are more expenditures than profits, nobody invests in anything, and medical progress comes to a halt.?

Dmitry maintains that pharmaceutical companies run on principles similar to those in any other kind of business; to create a new product, it is necessary to take on a certain amount of risk, to invest in an idea and set up the conditions and environment for the project to come to fruition. Capital needed to invest in a standard laboratory for the research and development of a given drug can run up to the millions of dollars just for equipment and space. Add on maintenance and material expenses, among other things, and it becomes understandable why Big Pharma is so interested in making a profit.

Pharma?s scientists are a harried, hardworking bunch, relying on government and business funding grants to keep them afloat and on top of the research and development game. And they need their work to yield some kind of a return on all the effort and expense they go through. So don?t be too hard on Big Pharma; it represents innovation and scientific striving. And like any industry or system, it is far from perfect.

You want my opinion? I think we should bring DCA to Kickstarter, or a similar funding platform. Let?s launch DCA into the stratosphere. Let?s give cancer the middle finger. Let?s give to a cause bigger than ourselves. The health of our near and dear ones is at stake.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 offers two new sets of forged-aluminum wheels, including a unique wheel for cars with the optional packages. The 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are coupled with Goodyear Eagle? F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires on all configurations.

The new Shelby GT500 driving dynamics have been overhauled, now working in concert with Goodyear tires. New Brembo? brakes with six-piston calipers in front and the new wheels also required unique suspension tuning to ensure everything works harmoniously.

The 5.8-liter V8 aluminum-block engine produces 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the highest-horsepower engine ever produced in North America. Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, an all-forged engine rotating assembly, updated camshaft profiles, upgraded head gaskets, a new carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

A larger and more efficient supercharger helping flow more air through the engine is key to producing the 662 horsepower. The new Twin Vortices Series 2300 blower creates 2.3 liters of displacement and is a unique design to the 5.8-liter engine.

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood may seek to modify, but will not destroy, Egypt's 33-year-old peace treaty with Israel, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said on Saturday.

Carter, 87, was speaking after initial vote tallies put the Brotherhood's candidate ahead in the first round of Egypt's presidential election, which his Carter Center helped monitor.

The U.S. statesman, who brought together Israeli leader Menachem Begin and Egypt's Anwar Sadat in 1978 to agree the Camp David accords which led to a 1979 treaty, said he had held long discussions with senior Brotherhood figures in Egypt this week.

"My opinion is that the treaty will not be modified in any unilateral way," Carter said at a news conference in Cairo to present the preliminary findings of his election monitors.

Official results in Egypt's first free leadership election are due on Tuesday, but informal tallies put the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and Mubarak's last Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in the lead. If confirmed, they would fight a run-off in June.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist who has championed Palestinian resistance against Israel, was running a close third.

The peace treaty remains a lynchpin of U.S./Middle East policy and, despite its unpopularity with many Egyptians, was staunchly upheld by President Hosni Mubarak until his overthrow last year in a popular uprising.

The Brotherhood, long suppressed under Mubarak, is vehemently critical of Israel, and its Palestinian offshoot Hamas rules the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials have watched political turmoil since Mubarak's overthrow with growing wariness.

Mubarak's fall opened up a freer form of Egyptian politics in which the popular mood looms far larger.

Mursi criticizes Israel but says he would respect the treaty. One of his aides said Mursi would not meet Israeli officials as president, though he might delegate that task.

Cairo needs good ties with Israel's closest ally the United States, which provides billions of dollars in military and civilian aid and is pressing other major foreign donors to support Egypt's struggling economy.

But some of the election contenders said the peace treaty should be reviewed, partly because of perceptions the deal Carter brokered was biased in Israel's favor.

Carter said the treaty had not been violated by either side since its inception and that any problems had been resolved peacefully, including a flare-up of tension last year over the killing of some Egyptian border guards.

"The Israelis apologized for that. They see great value in preserving the treaty," said Carter....

The Egyptians have made a mockery of it -- while not going to war with Israel, they've encouraged a level of Islamic antisemitism that has put the Muslim Brotherhood at the forefront of Egyptian politics and cast the future of the peace treaty with Israel into doubt.

Aurora mayor eyes loan to RTD to speed up work on I-225 light rail

If Aurora wants to see light rail along the entire Interstate 225 corridor anytime soon, it might have to fund it upfront itself.

That's the message coming from Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, who, like others in the city, is frustrated that the FasTracks project is off track because of a lack of funding.

The Regional Transportation District estimates that light rail through the I-225 corridor ? one of the most congested stretches in the state ? could be completed by 2026. But some are skeptical that date is realistic and contend even if it is accurate, it is too much time to spend completing the project.

Without another tax hike to fund FasTracks, projects like the I-225 corridor could be delayed for years. A coalition of metro-area mayors has balked at asking voters for another tax increase this year or next to further the project, citing the continued struggles in the economy.

So Hogan envisions either asking Aurora voters in 2013 for a sales-tax or property-tax increase to complete the light rail project from East Iliff Avenue to Smith Road near Interstate 70. That stretch of light rail would connect with the east line project running between Union Station and Denver International Airport.

If approved, Aurora would front the money to RTD, which would oversee the construction of the project, then the city could get reimbursed for the costs over time.

At least that's the idea.

Light rail now runs from Interstate 25 in Denver, along I-225 to South Parker Road. Construction is underway to extend that more than 1.5 miles from Parker Road to Iliff. But the majority of the corridor, including the growing Anschutz Medical Campus, will remain unserved by light rail. The entire corridor is about 12 miles long.

"The way to get this done early is to think about doing it ourselves," Hogan said. "Everybody understands we have got to get light rail to the Anschutz Medical Campus."

The campus sees upward of 40,000 "vehicle movements" a day, said RTD board member Tom Tobiassen, who represents Aurora on the board, and there are only 19,000 parking spaces at the campus, located at the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.

Tobiassen supports having more discussions with Aurora about Hogan's idea that Aurora could "loan" the money to RTD.

"The need is bad right now, and it's going to get worse as the campus continues to add jobs," Tobiassen said.

RTD is soliciting bids from private companies for the I-225 project and other unfinished transportation projects in the metro area. Tobiassen said RTD expects to see proposals sometime in mid-June.

Aurora and other communities waiting for the projects to be completed will have a better sense of what needs to be done and how those projects could be funded sometime after that.

The Aurora City Council has not had formal discussions on whether to go to voters next year.

Councilman Bob Broom, however, agrees that steps need to be taken to ensure light rail on I-225.

"I think Steve's right. We can't just throw up our hands and say that's not going to get done," Broom said. "If RTD doesn't raise revenues, it's going to take a long time."

What are search engines? I like to think of them as the librarians of the Internet. If your business is well positioned with search engines it means you are more likely to be found when people are surfing the Internet. Using search engines is essential to getting traffic flow to your website.

This will have a couple of spin-off effects.

Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET:?When protesters at Amazon.com's?(AMZN) annual meeting blasted the e-commerce giant for subjecting warehouse workers to triple-digit temperatures, company executives were the ones feeling the heat.

CEO Jeff Bezos announced that the company will spend $52 million adding air-conditioning to its network of warehouses, the Seattle Times reported?and Amazon spokeswoman Mary Osako confirmed via email. (The company did not provide any additional comment.)?

Amazon was criticized last year after a local newspaper in Pennsylvania reported how workers at its warehouse there had to endure heat indexes of 110 degrees in the summer months ? sometimes for as little as $11 an hour.

"During summer heat waves, Amazon arranged to have paramedics parked in ambulances outside" in anticipation of workers succumbing to the blistering-hot conditions, the Morning Call?wrote. On one June day alone, 15 workers collapsed from the heat.

The investigative report prompted an inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, after which the company added fans and louvered doors for ventilation, and passed out water and cold snacks on hot days. Workers told the Morning Call the measures didn't do enough to make the extreme heat bearable.?

Roughly 150 protesters convened on Amazon's annual meeting, held at the Seattle Museum of Art on Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nearly 22 million TV viewers seems like a lot ? but for an "American Idol" season-ender, it's a new low.

The crowd that tuned in Wednesday night when bluesy guitar man Phillip Phillips won the "Idol" crown constituted the smallest for an "Idol" finale in its history, according to final Nielsen Co. figures.

The audience of 21.5 million was down by nearly one-third from the 29.3 million viewers who saw country singer Scotty McCreery's victory a year ago, an audience total that had rebounded by 20 percent from the finale in 2010.

The Fox singing competition has experienced ratings erosion during this entire season, its 11th.

ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" finale show on Tuesday night also drew its lowest audience ever for a season-capper, averaging 17.5 million viewers, down 18 percent from a year ago.

Biden dismisses Romney's experience in business

KEENE, N.H. (AP) ? The presidential campaign debate over Republican Mitt Romney's tenure at a private equity firm is going down the drain.

Vice President Joe Biden argued Tuesday that Romney's experience doesn't make him any more qualified to be president than it does to make him a plumber.

"That doesn't mean that private equity guys are bad guys ? they're not," Biden said at New Hampshire's Keene State College. "But that no more qualifies you to be president than being a plumber. And, by the way, there're an awful lot of smart plumbers. All kidding aside, it's not the same job requirement."

Romney argues that his business experience with the Boston-based firm Bain Capital makes him best suited to fix the economy and create jobs.

Biden's fourth trip to New Hampshire this year was an acknowledgment of the state's battleground status in the upcoming election.

Though he briefly criticized Romney on social issues such as contraception and touched on Romney's lack of foreign policy experience, most of his speech was devoted to echoing what Obama has been saying this week ? that Romney's success making money for investors at Bain Capital is not reason alone to be elected president.

The Romney campaign has called such criticism a distraction, an affront to free markets and a misreading of the firm's success. The campaign released a Web video last week featuring workers from an Indiana company that benefited from Bain's involvement.

Democrats have been focusing on the companies that Bain took over only to close them or let them fail. In addition to running ads and Web videos, the Obama campaign has been sending Biden to battleground states to press the issue.

In New Hampshire, Biden argued that when companies fail, it costs taxpayers in unemployment benefits and costs businesses that end up paying into a fund that helps laid-off workers recover their pensions. Like Obama, however, Biden stopped short of criticizing profit-making in general.

"That's their job. It's legitimate. But folks, making money regardless of the consequences for the workers at the companies they acquire or the communities that get wasted is another question," he said.

Biden said voters have an easy choice between what he described as the Obama administration's "commonsense approach" to a Republican philosophy that he asserted advocates "no rules for the big guys" and "no accountability when the fail."

"We will not go back to the '50s on social policy, to the Cold War on foreign policy, and the policies of our last administration on our economic policies," he said. "We will not do it their way again."

Biden said the economy is recovering, pointing to a chart showing job growth during Obama's tenure as president.

"That doesn't mean a lot of people aren't still hurting, and we're determined to change that," he said. "We've made important progress, but there's much more to do. But progress you can measure, just look at the chart. Progress that cannot be denied. Progress you can see."

The Romney campaign dismissed Biden's argument.

"Vice President Biden today claimed the Obama administration's economic progress 'cannot be denied,'" Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement. "He must not be talking to the millions of Americans who are suffering from declining incomes, fewer jobs and skyrocketing household costs in the Obama economy."

Berkeley Lab researchers observations of nanorod crystal growth points way to next-generation energy devices

In the growth of crystals, do nanoparticles act as "artificial atoms" forming molecular-type building blocks that can assemble into complex structures? This is the contention of a major but controversial theory to explain nanocrystal growth. A study by researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) may resolve the controversy and point the way to energy devices of the future.

Led by Haimei Zheng, a staff scientist in Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division, the researchers used a combination of transmission electron microscopy and advanced liquid cell handling techniques to carry out real-time observations of the growth of nanorods from nanoparticles of platinum and iron. Their observations support the theory of nanoparticles acting like artificial atoms during crystal growth.

"We observed that as nanoparticles become attached they initially form winding polycrystalline chains," Zheng says. "These chains eventually align and attach end-to-end to form nanowires that straighten and stretch into single crystal nanorods with length-to-thickness ratios up to 40:1. This nanocrystal growth process, whereby nanoparticle chains as well as nanoparticles serve as the fundamental building blocks for nanorods, is both smart and efficient."

Zheng is the corresponding author of a paper describing this research in the journal Science. The paper is titled "Real-Time Imaging of Pt3Fe Nanorod Growth in Solution." Co-authors are Hong-Gang Liao, Likun Cui and Stephen Whitelam.

If the near limitless potential of nanotechnology is to even be approached, scientists will need a much better understanding of how nano-sized particles can assemble into hierarchical structures of ever-increasing organization and complexity. Such understanding comes from tracking nanoparticle growth trajectories and determining the forces that guide these trajectories.

Through the use of transmission electron microscopy and liquid observation cells, scientists at Berkeley Lab and elsewhere have made significant progress in observing nanoparticle growth trajectories, including the oriented attachment of nanoparticles - the chemical phenomenon that starts the growth of nanocrystals in solution. However, these observations have typically been limited to the first few minutes of crystal growth. In their study, Zheng and her colleagues were able to extend the time of observation from minutes to hours.

"The key to studying the growth of colloidal nanocrystals with different shapes and architectures is to maintain the liquid in the viewing window long enough to allow complete reactions," Zheng says. "We dissolved molecular precursors of platinum and iron in an organic solvent and used capillary pressure to draw the growth solution into a silicon-nitride liquid cell that we sealed with epoxy. The sealing of the cell was especially important as it helped keep the liquid from turning viscous over time. Previously, we'd often see the liquids become viscous and this would prevent the nanoparticle interactions that drive crystal growth from taking place."

Zheng and her colleagues chose to study the growth of platinum iron nanorods because of the electrocatalytic material's promising potential for use in next generation energy conversion and storage devices. They were able to observe these nanoparticles assemble into nanorod crystals using powerful transmission electron microscopes at Berkeley Lab's National Center for Electron Microscopy, including TEAM 0.5 (Transmission Electron Aberration-corrected Microscope), which can produce images with half angstrom resolution less than the diameter of a single hydrogen atom.

"From what we observed only single nanoparticles exist at the beginning of crystal growth, but, as growth proceeds, small chains of nanoparticles become dominant until, ultimately, only long chains of nanoparticles can be seen," Zheng says. "Our observations provide a link between the world of single molecules and hierarchical nanostructures, paving the way for the rational design of nanomaterials with controlled properties."
