NEW YORK (AP) ? Eddie Van Halen has undergone emergency surgery for a digestive disease and is canceling his tour in Japan to recover.
His representative said Thursday that the guitarist had a "severe bout of diverticulitis," a painful condition that involves the formation of pouches on the outside of the colon. He is expected to recover in four to six months.
The rep added that the 57-year-old will not require more surgeries to treat the disease.
The musician had plans to tour Japan in November and will reschedule the dates for next year.
Van Halen is best known for hits including "Jump," ''Why Can't This Be Love" and "When It's Love." The group released a new album, "A Different Kind of Truth," in February.
The Supertrees at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay are made with Holcim high strength green concrete for a reduced carbon footprint. Image: Eco-Business.
The construction industry is scrambling to find sustainable building materials for Asia?s booming cities, and companies are now competing for industrial waste to replace some of the natural resources they consume, say experts.
In Singapore, the lack of natural resources and growing demand for green buildings are driving the hunt for alternative building materials, and several concrete manufacturers have turned to a limited supply of recycled materials and industrial by-products.
One manufacturer that has done so is Holcim Singapore, a subsidiary of the Swiss-headquartered Holcim Group.
?We look for win-win solutions that offer immediate value and provide a commercial advantage,? said managing director Sujit Ghosh in an interview at the firm?s recently opened Centre of Excellence.
Holcim established the new centre with support from Singapore?s Economic Development Board. Its aim is to take products at the research and development stage and turn them into commercial products saleable in Asian market.
/>/>/>/> />
Holcim is no stranger to using recycled materials in its products. In 2007, prompted by the sand crisis (see sidebar), Holcim started using waste collected from Singapore?s shipping industry in the making of its concrete. But first, it had to convince the regulator, Building and Construction Authority (BCA), that such material was safe enough to be allowed in building codes, noted Dr Ghosh.
The new concrete, called Holcim Green, was made from recycled granite from old buildings. Part of the sand needed in the process was also replaced with processed copper slag used by shipyards to clean ships.
Holcim obtained its copper slag by setting up a joint venture with local waste processing firm ecoWise in 2008, but the 400,000 tonnes that Singapore?s shipyards discard annually is only enough for about one month of the manufacturer?s concrete production.
The company produces about 1.5 million cubic metres of concrete each year, of which 5 to 10 per cent is certified green concrete.
Now that copper slag and other alternative materials- such as debris from building demolitions ? have been approved by building regulators, competition for those resources is increasing, said Dr Ghosh.
The firm is currently finalizing plans to use waste materials from Singapore?s waste incinerators, known as incinerator bottom ash.
This waste, of up to half a million tonnes each year, would otherwise end up in the Republic?s only landfill. Semakau Landfill is located off-shore and is currently under expansion so that it can continue to receive waste through at least 2045.
Home-grown Samwoh Group, which specializes in road building and also makes certified green ready-mixed concrete, is another manufacturer recycling waste back into building supplies.
The firm has two plants in Singapore that recycle asphalt and concrete from construction projects.? In 2010, it also built the Samwoh Eco-Green Building following a joint study with BCA and Singapore?s Nanyang Technological University to prove the safety of buildings using high percentages of recycled content. The building was the first in the region to use 100 per cent recycled ingredients for the concrete aggregate, which is the material added to cement and water to make the final product.
A shortage of waste
Holcim?s Dr Ghosh said that if there was an unlimited supply of recycled materials and by-products, the industry could easily replace half of the virgin materials it consumes without affecting the quality of the concrete. However, the available supply of copper slag, construction debris and incinerator bottom ash combined provides only a fraction ? about 10 per cent ? ?of the material Singapore?s building industry needs for concrete, he noted.
?Asia is not going to decrease its insatiable demand to build, so we need to figure out how we can do more with less,? said Dr Ghosh.
To reduce the demand for concrete from the construction industry, Holcim developed an eco-friendly high strength concrete that can decrease the amount of material needed for building projects by up to 50 per cent.
Two years ago, Holcim again worked with BCA to amend building codes that allow the use of high strength concrete, which was already used in Europe and Japan.
Since then, the firm has seen increased interest from builders that want to lower their carbon footprint and increase available floor area by using less bulky concrete structures, noted Dr Ghosh.
He predicted that over the next five years, the company?s high strength concrete could grow to 20 to 30 per cent of its overall production now that BCA is encouraging the use of such materials to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.
While green concrete and green building designs are important to reducing the building industry?s environmental impacts, they are only part of the solution, he said.
The industry has done a good job focusing on design and energy efficiency, but has only just begun to map out the overall environmental impacts of the construction process, he explained.
He has seen some progress, including growing emphasis on productivity and sustainable materials, and better sorting of demolition debris. Three years ago, contractors sent stones from demolition sites to the landfill with the rest of the debris, but now they are all reused, he noted.
However, Dr Ghosh said building developers will need a bigger push, possibly in the form of a carbon price, to fully address the impacts of a project from start to finish.
Iraq's military took delivery of nine American M1A1 Abrams tanks, the last in an order of 140 that it has received over the past two years, the US embassy in Baghdad said in a statement on Wednesday.
The tanks, which were displayed at a demonstration exercise at a military training complex southeast of the capital, are part of Baghdad's efforts to build up its military, which US and Iraqi officials admit cannot secure the country's borders, airspace, or maritime waters.
"The Iraqi Army officially took possession of nine M1A1 tanks at Besmaya Combat Training Centre, Iraq, on August 27," the statement said.
The 140 tanks cost a total of $860 million, $804 million of which was paid by Iraq with the remainder of the cost borne by the US, according to Commander Gary Ross, a spokesman for the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq, part of the US embassy.
Iraq received the first batch of tanks, which it ordered in March 2009, in August 2010.
The tanks' capabilities and their operators' training was put on display at the Besmaya complex on Wednesday, the statement said.
"This exercise clearly illustrates the growing capabilities of the Iraqi Army," said OSC-I commander Lieutenant General Robert Caslen.
Iraqi Army chief of staff Lieutenant General Babaker Zebari has persistently said that the country's military will not be able to fully defend it until 2020, though US and Iraqi officials insist the armed forces and police are capable of maintaining internal security.
Baghdad has made $12 billion worth of military acquisitions from the US, whose forces pulled out of Iraq in December, notably including the purchase of 36 F-16 warplanes.
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? A team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has spotted sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a young Sun-like star. This is the first time sugar been found in space around such a star, and the discovery shows that the building blocks of life are in the right place, at the right time, to be included in planets forming around the star.
The astronomers found molecules of glycolaldehyde -- a simple form of sugar [1] -- in the gas surrounding a young binary star, with similar mass to the Sun, called IRAS 16293-2422. Glycolaldehyde has been seen in interstellar space before [2], but this is the first time it has been found so near to a Sun-like star, at distances comparable to the distance of Uranus from the Sun in the Solar System. This discovery shows that some of the chemical compounds needed for life existed in this system at the time of planet formation [3].
"In the disc of gas and dust surrounding this newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde, which is a simple form of sugar, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee," explains Jes J?rgensen (Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark), the lead author of the paper. "This molecule is one of the ingredients in the formation of RNA, which -- like DNA, to which it is related -- is one of the building blocks of life."
The high sensitivity of ALMA -- even at the technically challenging shortest wavelengths at which it operates -- was critical for these observations, which were made with a partial array of antennas during the observatory's Science Verification phase [4].
"What it is really exciting about our findings is that the ALMA observations reveal that the sugar molecules are falling in towards one of the stars of the system," says team member Cecile Favre (Aarhus University, Denmark). "The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction."
The gas and dust clouds that collapse to form new stars are extremely cold [5] and many gases solidify as ice on the particles of dust where they then bond together and form more complex molecules. But once a star has been formed in the middle of a rotating cloud of gas and dust, it heats the inner parts of the cloud to around room temperature, evaporating the chemically complex molecules, and forming gases that emit their characteristic radiation as radio waves that can be mapped using powerful radio telescopes such as ALMA.
IRAS 16293-2422 is located around 400 light-years away, comparatively close to Earth, which makes it an excellent target for astronomers studying the molecules and chemistry around young stars. By harnessing the power of a new generation of telescopes such as ALMA, astronomers now have the opportunity to study fine details within the gas and dust clouds that are forming planetary systems.
"A big question is: how complex can these molecules become before they are incorporated into new planets? This could tell us something about how life might arise elsewhere, and ALMA observations are going to be vital to unravel this mystery," concludes Jes J?rgensen.
The work is described in a paper to appear in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA is funded in Europe by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC) and in East Asia by the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan. ALMA construction and operations are led on behalf of Europe by ESO, on behalf of North America by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) and on behalf of East Asia by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) provides the unified leadership and management of the construction, commissioning and operation of ALMA.
Notes
[1] Sugar is the common name for a range of small carbohydrates (molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, typically with a hydrogen:oxygen atomic ratio of 2:1, as in water). Glycolaldehyde has the chemical formula C2H4O2. The sugar commonly used in food and drink is sucrose, which is a larger molecule than glycolaldehyde, and another example of this set of compounds.
[2] Glycolaldehyde has been detected in two places in space so far -- first towards the Galactic Centre cloud Sgr B2, [using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 12 Meter Telescope at Kitt Peak (USA) in 2000][1], and [with the NSF's Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (also USA) in 2004][2], and in the high-mass hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 [using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (France) in 2008][3].
[3] Accurate laboratory measurements of the characteristic wavelengths of radio waves emitted by glycolaldehyde were critical for the team's identification of the molecule in space. In addition to the glycolaldehyde, IRAS 16293-2422 is also known to harbour a number of other complex organic molecules, including ethylene glycol, methyl formate and ethanol.
[4] Early scientific observations with a partial array of antennas began in 2011 (see[ eso1137][4]). Both before and after this, a range of Science Verification observations have been performed to demonstrate that ALMA is capable of producing data of the required quality, and the data produced have been made publicly available. The results described here use some of these Science Verification data. Construction of ALMA will be completed in 2013, when 66 high-precision antennas will be fully operational.
[5] They are usually around 10 degrees above absolute zero: about -263 degrees Celsius.

Yes, Kardashian go-karted with Rihanna over the weekend, but he laughed off any romantic notions.
“It’s because Rihanna’s a friend, and she is friends with my friend Capricorn, and it was her birthday," Rob said. "Then we all went out to celebrate our friend’s birthday. It was fun! It was a good night!”
Beside, Kardashian is dating Rita Ora, right? Isn't that right, Rob?
I'm “just a fan," Kardashian said of the British singer. "That’s all. I’m a big fan."
Hmmm... is Rob Kardashian being coy? Shy about his private life? Not milking it for every ounce of publicity he can? What family does he think he belongs to?!?
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? The New England Banksia is largely restricted to the eastern edge of the New England Tableland, and is common in places along Waterfall Way. Ms Stimpson's research has raised this flowering plant, until now classified as a variety of the Hairpin Banksia (B. spinulosa), to the taxonomic level of a distinct species.
The study was published in the open access journal PhytoKeys.
"I love the Proteaceae -- the family of flowering plants that includes the Banksia and Grevillea genera in Australia and Protea in South Africa," Ms Stimpson said. "Surprisingly, molecular evidence in recent years has shown the family's closest relatives are the Sacred Lotus and the plane trees. Species of Banksia survive in poor soil and still manage to produce marvellous flowers."
Margaret Stimpson wrote the paper in collaboration with Ian Telford, the Curator of the N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium at the University of New England, Professor Jeremy Bruhl, the Director of the herbarium, and Dr Peter Weston, Senior Principal Research Scientist at the National Herbarium of NSW, an international specialist in Proteaceae systematics.
Margaret's first project as an undergraduate student of botany at UNE was on the Proteaceae, and she's been collecting specimens ever since. Now working towards enrolling in a doctoral degree program, she said: "There are still species of Banksia out there that merit description, and I hope to test these in a PhD project."
Margaret established the species rank of the New England Banksia by detailed studies of its leaves, flowers, stem and fruit, and considerations of its ecology and distribution. She explained that it has two growth forms, the more common being a multi-stemmed small shrub with many flowers but few seeds. This form occurs where there has been regular burning, and the seeds need exposure to fire to open. The less common form, found where burning has not occurred, is a single-stemmed tree with many flowers and many seeds that open spontaneously without exposure to fire.

Deadly riots broke out in Kenya's main port of Mombasa on Monday after the assassination of a radical cleric linked to Somalia's Al-Qaeda-allied Shebab militants.
At least one person was hacked to death as thousands of angry protestors took to the streets after Aboud Rogo Mohammed -- who was on US and UN sanction lists for allegedly supporting the Shebab -- was shot dead.
"A car behind us aimed at my husband, they shot him on the right side," said his widow Haniya Said, screaming in grief after the killing by unknown attackers.
"One person has been killed, he was slashed to death during the protests," said regional police chief Aggrey Adoli.
Cars were set on fire and two churches were looted in the city -- Kenya's main port and a key tourist hub -- according to an AFP reporter.
"There is chaos in town now, and our officers are on the ground dispersing the rioters to maintain peace," added Adoli. "They are demonstrating against the killing of Aboud Rogo, who was shot by unknown people."
Witnesses said that Mohammed's car was riddled with bullets, and a photograph released by his supporters showed his bloody corpse slumped behind the wheel of a car.
"He died as we rushed him to hospital. Why have they killed my dear husband?" his widow added, before she and her children were taken to the hospital.
Mohammed was placed on a US sanctions list in July for "engaging in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security or stability of Somalia", specifically for recruiting and fundraising for the hardline Shebab.
The United Nations Security Council placed a travel ban and asset freeze on the cleric in July, saying he had provided "financial, material, logistical or technical support to Al-Shebab".
He was the "main ideological leader" of Kenya's Al Hijra group, also known as the Muslim Youth Center (MYC), the UN said. The group is viewed as a close ally of the Shebab in Kenya.
Mohammed "used the extremist group as a pathway for radicalisation and recruitment of principally Swahili-speaking Africans for carrying out violent militant activity in Somalia", the UN said.
MYC leader Sheikh Ahmad Iman Ali, in a message posted on Twitter, said: "We are on the right track when our leaders get shahadah (martyrdom)."
"He will remain in our hearts forever," the MYC added, while another message offered the grim warning that the "kuffar (infidels) will pay" for his death.
"The whole city is on fire, there are looters in the streets, cars have been damaged, some have been burnt," said Francis Auma, from the local organisation Muslims for Human Rights.
"An imam in the mosque shouted through the speaker 'blood for blood', and immediately youths started stoning cars," said witness Dennis Odhiambo, whose car was damaged and who was forced to flee into a police station for safety.
The local Muslim Human Rights Forum condemned Mohammed's assassination, claiming it "mirrors" the recent killings or disappearance of others "on the country's terrorism watch list".
Mohammed "repeatedly called for the violent rejection of the Somali peace process", the US Treasury said, noting he had often advocated the use of violence against both the UN and the African Union force battling the Shebab in Somalia.
He "urged his audiences to travel to Somalia to join Al-Shebab's fight against the Kenyan government", the Treasury added.
Kenyan police arrested the preacher in January, seizing firearms, ammunition and detonators, but later released him on bail.
He was previously acquitted of the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel near Mombasa which killed 15 people -- 12 Kenyans and three Israelis -- as well as three suicide bombers.
The cleric is also alleged to have introduced Fazul Abdullah Mohammed -- the late head of Al-Qaeda's east Africa cell, shot dead last year in Somalia's war-torn capital Mogadishu -- to at least one of the men who helped him carry out the twin US embassy bombings in 1998.
The bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam killed 224 people.
Mohammed, born on Kenya's Lamu island, was aged between 43 and 52, according to different aliases.
All of us brush our own teeth correctly, floss often and always use a handy mouth wash, just in case. But sometimes dentistry problems still find the way to trouble us as well as our way of life. Fortunately, there are dentistry surgery methods to remedy these complaints.
Perhaps the most common disease is cavities, but unfortunately, additionally it is often forgotten. Unless we already sense pain from your toothache, the particular visit to the particular dentist is frequently shrugged off. It is simply when the ache is almost incredible that we think about tooth extraction seriously. Tooth extraction is often a dental process which takes away a teeth from the navicular bone socket. Teeth that need to be extracted are not only people that have oral cavaties and are surrounded by caries. A six-week string of gains in the S&P 500 ended on Friday amid shifting expectations for central bank stimulus. Next week could bring clarity on that issue, and that could determine whether the recent rally that took the index to four-year highs will persist.?
"The streak is broken, but the trend isn't, and I think the next major move on the S&P will push us up towards 1,450 or 1,500," said Mark Arbeter, chief technical strategist for Standard & Poor's in New York. "Small- and mid-cap stocks are near their all-time highs, and if they break those highs, I think that will prompt the market to really rip higher."?
Still, the market could be in for a bumpy ride next week ahead of Friday's meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Investors are looking for clues on whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will announce a third round of quantitative easing.?
Bets on aggressive action to increase growth have spurred most of the market's recent gains, meaning any disappointment could stop the rally in its tracks. The CBOE Volatility index or VIX, a measure of investor anxiety, jumped almost 13 percent this week.?
While many analysts expect QE3 -- and Bernanke wrote a letter to a congressional panel that the Fed has room to deliver it -- the odds seemed to decline following comments on Thursday from James Bullard, a non-voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee. He said the latest Fed minutes, which indicated the central bank might be ready for more stimulus, were "stale."?
"Rhetoric is going back and forth about what we can expect, and we could see some big gyrations going into the meeting, depending on the latest rumor," said Michael Matousek, senior trader at U.S. Global Investors Inc. in San Antonio, Texas.?
Is QE3 baked into the cake??
?
In the recent six-week winning streak, the S&P's longest since January 2011, the index climbed 4.7 percent. That could indicate QE3 has already been priced into shares.?
"I think we're priced so that we won't see a major move if something is announced," Matousek said. "But if the status quo persists, which is what I'm expecting, that could be a big disappointment."?
Daily trading volume, which has been among the lowest of the year recently, is expected to remain muted ahead of the meeting. Low volume could amplify stock swings in both directions, and there is little other news to otherwise drive trading.?
Following the Jackson Hole meeting, there will be a market holiday on Sept. 3 for Labor Day. Trading is expected to pick up after that, with a major catalyst seen on Sept. 6, when the European Central Bank has its next meeting.?
The ECB recently pledged to "do whatever it takes" to address the euro zone's debt crisis, comments that contributed to recent positive sentiment.?
Earnings season is winding down, with only five S&P 500 components scheduled to report next week, including Tiffany & Co , Joy Global Inc and H.J. Heinz.
With 98 percent of S&P 500 companies having reported results, 67 percent have topped expectations by an average surprise factor of 4.3 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data. The 67 percent beat rate is higher than the long-term average of 62 percent. However, there have been some notable disappointments lately, including Hewlett-Packard Co.?
Economic indicators includes August reads on consumer confidence and sentiment, the latest read on Chicago PMI and July pending home sales. The Fed's Beige Book, a collection of anecdotal information on current economic conditions, will also be released.?
"The market is torn between macroeconomic concerns on one hand, and relatively good earnings and business trends on the other," said John Carey, who helps oversee $260 billion as a portfolio manager at Pioneer Investment Management in Boston.?
"I'm encouraged by the fundamentals out there, but unquestionably, the economy has slowed."?
The S&P 500 fell 0.5 percent this week, a relatively mild decline after six weeks of gains. On Tuesday, it surged to its highest level since June 2008 before pulling back. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 0.9 percent for the week, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.2 percent.?
"The market has been so strong lately that there's the idea Bernanke could pull back from QE3 as a result of that," said Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading at Charles Schwab in Austin, Texas. "But then, all that really means is that the market is able to stand on its own two feet."?

Quint Tatro, Tatro Capital founder & president, says now is the time to go long equities.
If you are planning to embark on a luxury cruise voyage, then do not hesitate any more. As much as it may look like just an ordinary leisure outing, at the end of it all you will have developed great and lasting friendship with your cruising partners. It is from such friendships that you get to learn very many things that you never knew.
During your journey, you will be overjoyed to spend some time in the travel and leisure resorts which offer marvelous services and delicacies. As you cruise all over the fabulous ports and any other place that the cruise ship sails, you should not be worried of where you will sleep or eat. Almost all travel and leisure resorts operate all day and night long. Other than the mega cruise liners, there also exist a number of various types of ships that are of different sizes. Despite the big craze of travelling in the big ships, the smaller cruise ships are better when it comes to inland waterways navigation. This makes it very simple to view historic landmarks and cities.
Travel and leisure resorts offer some good place to relax after all the day?s site seeing and travelling. If you choose to travel on a larger cruise, they organize one or two shore excursions at every port of call. You get to go for one excursion in the morning hours, and the other one in the afternoon then from there you get your time to rest at any of the travel and leisure resorts. After the first excursion, all people gather back at the travel and leisure resorts for a sumptuous lunch buffet.
Although travel and leisure resorts also offer dinner, you might always miss it on the days that you go out for an afternoon excursion and come back late at night or early evening. However, you should not miss out on any adventure just because of one meal or two. The travel and leisure resorts are always open and all of them offer very good and high quality meals. Sometimes, you can even explore the city, an island, town, or other landmarks and tourist attractions on your own provided you get to the ship on time or else, it will sail without you.
Do not forget that your vacation time is limited. You should distribute your time effectively so that you do not spend too much time in the travel and leisure resorts at the expense of shore excursions. The other very important thing that you should not forget to carry with you is the travel guide book. Without this book, you may end up lost or you may never know where certain sites are found. Some travel and leisure resorts have these guides but they cannot allow you to leave with them. Similarly, you can also carry a camera which you will use to take photos and videos. You should therefore make sure that the memory card is big enough to store all those images and videos.

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympic rings have disappeared across London, and the Paralympic symbols hoisted in their place. Let the games begin ? again.
Thousands of athletes have already arrived for Wednesday's opening ceremony as the Paralympics return to their roots.
The familiar face of Oscar Pistorius and his even more recognizable blades have helped to take the Paralympic movement to the masses ? with 2.3 million tickets already sold.
August has been a groundbreaking month for Pistorius.
The South African will be defending the three titles won four years ago at the Beijing Paralympics, just weeks after becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics.
"I am incredibly excited to be back in London," said Pistorius, who raced in the 400 meters and 4x400 relay earlier this month in the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. "It was an incredible experience to compete at the Olympic Games and the reception from the crowd I will remember for the rest of my life."
The 25-year-old Pistorius had to contend with battles on and off the track to become the poster boy of the Paralympics, where he will be competing over 100, 200 and 400.
"He is massive," London organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe said. "In Trafalgar Square this time last year for International Paralympic Day, (there was) a queue of kids who were screaming his name out and wanting autographs."
But Coe stressed that the medals "are not nailed on for him" at the Paralympics.
"Sport is at its best when you have head to heads," he added.
The thrilling duel should come in the 100, with Pistorius no longer the fastest man on no legs.
The "Blade Runner" experienced his first defeat in Paralympic competition in seven years when Jerome Singleton of the United States beat him by 0.002 seconds to win the 100 world title last year, while Jonnie Peacock of Britain has the world record.
"The 100m will be the most competitive 100m race I believe we will have ever seen at the games," Pistorius said.
"I am very well aware of the competition that's out there and I've never been one to be too self-assured or too brash," he added. "I'm comfortable with where I am, as far as my speed work goes on the 100m but I'm very well aware that the other guys are posting quick times."
Pistorius has helped shine the spotlight on the Paralympics more than ever before.
"The Paralympic movement has come of age," International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven said. "Having a sellout is amazing. A sellout prior to the games starting is unheard of ... it makes you feel good as an athlete."
Many of the 4,200 athletes from 165 countries will parade in the opening ceremony that will celebrate the visionary doctor who conceived the Paralympics.
Ludwig Guttmann used sport in the rehabilitation of servicemen injured in World War II, and organized a hospital games at the time of the 1948 London Olympics that evolved from 1960 into the Paralympics.
"Without sounding too nationalistic or even jingoistic about it, it was created here in '48, we drove all the early stages of the movement," Coe said. "A lot of us do feel they are coming home."
And it's a chance to raise the profile further.
"This really is an opportunity to change attitudes and confront some of the misconceptions that are still out there about disability," Coe said.
That's achieved by creating one festival of sport in the summer in London, with the Paralympics the second element, sharing the same "London 2012" logo.
"We have never treated it as an after show and I think Beijing was a great example of it never being an after show," Craven said.
But for all Craven talks about infusing "equal splendor" between the Olympics and Paralympics, there is frustration at the lack of parity with television coverage.
In the U.S., NBC will air only 5 1-2 hours of Paralympic programming ? none of it live ? with the bulk of the highlights appearing on its cable sports channel.
"It's particularly a disappointment when I look at it from the view of the American public, they will have a great team over here," Craven said.
"It just shows the USA isn't (always) right at the forefront of new things and new ideas ... we know the American public is ready for Paralympic sport."
But there will be widespread live coverage in Brazil, China, Britain and Australia.
"Countries learn over time, they get to know the Paralympics, they don't think it's much to begin with and once they see it they can't get enough of it," Craven said.

AllThingsD is confirming that Apple will unveil a seven-inch "iPad Mini" in October, following the September launch of the next-generation iPhone.
[More from Mashable: Apple Stock Hits All-Time High After Favorable Verdict]
ATD's John Paczkowski reports the "iPhone 5" and a smaller iPad will premiere at two separate events before the holiday season commences. He cites "several" unnamed sources. The next iPhone will debut at an "as-of-yet unannounced event" on Sept. 12, the report says.
"Only after the next generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it?s been working on," Paczkowski writes. "That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches, will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October."

Apple hasn't confirmed any plans.
For months, tech analysts have been debating the market's need for an Apple device that's larger than the iPhone and nearly three inches smaller than the existing 9.7-inch iPad.
Comparing the "iPad Mini" to the classic tablet, some argue it's a bad idea. Experts suggest the medium Apple device would offer consumers an "inferior" experience in terms of web browsing, video streaming, reading and writing. The diminutive iPad would be competing with several other 7-inch tablets on the market including Google's Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook tablet.
Are you waiting to buy an 7-inch Apple tablet or the next-generation iPhone? Tell us in the comments.
