Start an Online Business: An Overview of Online Marketing

Joe my gosh! You did it! You?ve established your site. You?ve got a rockin? opt-in. You are ready to go.

And now?you need customers.

Obviously, mo business can survive without clients. And no clients will ever find you without marketing. Luckily, everything you need to know about online marketing is totally learnable.

For most online businesses, the easiest place to start marketing online is with social media. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are all powerful tools when it comes to that all important reputation building and generating web traffic. Building relationships online will help people see that you are a real person offering real solutions, not just some fly by night Internet biz.

Social media is also important when it comes to building that list we set up in day 6. Make sure you?re sharing your sign-up page and letting your readers know what you?re offering in exchange. Just don?t get carried away. Remember, you want to build relationships, not just drop links.

Another key component of marketing online is content. Your goal with marketing your content is to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Content marketing can take many forms from blogging, to article marketing, to video marketing on YouTube, and even on podcasts. Creating content is a great way to build an audience of potential customers. And now that you?ve already got a blog set up, you can start by simply adding a new article once or twice per week.

Of course, I can?t leave out the ever important SEO principles when it comes to online marketing. Getting your site indexed in Google for your primary keywords will have a huge impact on your traffic. I?m not an expert in SEO, so if you?re looking for that help, I highly recommend you get in the loop over at SEOmoz.org. They have more free training to get you headed in the right direction than you could consume in a year!

But in the meantime, here are three things you?ll want to do to make sure you get found in Google:

?Make sure your content is well optimized for your keywords (ScribeSEO is a plugin that can help you do this very easily)
?Write content so good that it receives links around the Internet that lead back to your site (backlinks)
?Maintain a consistent and human presence in the social media arena

Remember that marketing online is a long-term strategy. The biggest reason businesses fail online is not because they don?t have a good website or because they don?t have good product. It?s because they give up too soon. Continue to interact with your market, share lots of content, build your mailing list, and your business will grow day by day.

Congrats! You did it. Whew! Now, you?re without excuse. Go get started this minute.
